Few-layer tin (Sn)-based nanosheets (NSs) with a thickness of ≈2.5 nm are successfully prepared using a modified liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) method. Here the first exploration of photo-electrochemical (PEC) and nonlinear properties of Sn NSs is presented. The results demonstrate that the PEC properties are tunable under different experimental conditions. Additionally, Sn NSs are shown to exhibit a unique self-powered PEC performance, maintaining a good long-term stability for up to 1 month. Using electron spin resonance, active species, such as hydroxyl radicals (·OH), superoxide radicals (·O ), and holes (h), are detected during operations, providing a deeper understanding of the working mechanism. Furthermore, measurements of nonlinear response reveal that Sn NSs can be effective for all-optical modulation, as it enables the realization of all-optical switching through excitation spatial cross-phase modulation (SXPM). These findings present new research insights and potential applications of Sn NSs in optoelectronics.

Obtaining a robust electrode composed of Sn-based metal oxides and carbonaceous matrix through nanoscale structure engineering is essential for effectively improving Li-ion batteries' electrochemical performance and stability. Herein, we report a bimetallic MoO-xSnO/Sn nanoparticles uniformly anchored on N, S co-doped graphene nanosheets (MoO-xSnO/Sn@NSG) as an anode electrode for Li-ion battery via a one-step hydrothermal and thermal treatment approach. In the MoO-xSnO/Sn nanocomposite, the generated Sn-O-Mo bond can modulate the electronic and composition structures to improve the intrinsic conductivity of SnO and reinforce the structural stability during cycles.

Dimension-Dependent Nonlinear Optical Properties of Stanene Nanosheets.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

Stanene (Sn)-based materials, with a graphene-like hexagonal structure, are now attracting considerable interest for potential applications in photoelectricity. However, the nonlinear optical properties of stanene remain largely unexplored. In this work, we prepared different sizes of stanene by liquid phase exfoliation and differential centrifugation methods, including two-dimensional (2D) Sn nanosheets (NSs) and zero-dimensional (0D) Sn nanodots (NDs).

Tin (Sn)-based materials are expected to realize efficient CO electroreduction into formate. Herein, we constructed a heterojunction by depositing Cu on Cu-doped SnS nanosheets. During the electrochemical reaction, this heterojunction evolves to a highly active phase of CuO@CuSn while maintaining its two-dimensional morphology.

Article Synopsis
  • The continuous miniaturization of integrated circuits pushes the need for smaller sizes but introduces challenges like high current density and Joule heating, which can lead to reliability issues due to electromigration.
  • Sn-based solders are favored in the industry for their performance, but high melting points of common variants (like SAC305) can hinder sophisticated applications; adding Bi lowers the melting point but raises electromigration concerns.
  • The article reviews how SnBi solder joints interact with Cu substrates under current flow, discussing issues like whisker formation and voids, and explores ways to enhance solder reliability through various additives and modifications without altering composition.
