A mixed phenotype is characteristic of de novo Mixed Phenotype Acute Leukemia (MPAL) but can also be seen in other leukemias. It poses substantial classification and management dilemmas. Herein, we report a large cohort of acute leukemia with a mixed phenotype and define Acute Myeloid Leukemia with Mixed Phenotype (AML-MP) and MPAL as two distinct groups by characterizing the clinical, genetic, and transcriptomic features.

DNA metabarcoding reveal hidden diversity of periphytic eukaryotes on marine Antarctic macroalgae.

An Acad Bras Cienc

January 2025

Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Instituto de Ciências Biológicas, Departamento de Microbiologia, Av. Antônio Carlos, 6627, Pampulha, 31270-000 Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil.

Polar marine macroalgae thrive in extreme conditions, often displaying geographic isolation and high degree of endemism. The "phycosphere" refers to the zone around the algae inhabited by microrganisms. Our study used DNA metabarcoding to survey the eukaryotic communities associated with seven seaweed species obtained at King George Island (South Shetland Islands, maritime Antarctic), including two Rhodophyta, two Chlorophyta and three Phaeophyceae.

Coral persistence in the Anthropocene depends on interactions among holobiont partners (coral animals and microbial symbionts) and their environment. Cryptic coral lineages-genetically distinct yet morphologically similar groups-are critically important as they often exhibit functional diversity relevant to thermal tolerance. In addition, environmental parameters such as thermal variability may promote tolerance, but how variability interacts with holobiont partners to shape responses to thermal challenge remains unclear.

Aim: Romania is currently facing a prolonged measles outbreak. The aim of the study was to analyse the circulating human measles virus (HMV) strains by combining whole genome sequencing (WGS) with phylogenetic analysis, with a focus on the haemagglutinin gene.

Methods: We conducted an observational study in the first five months of 2024, in which 168 patients diagnosed with measles were randomly included.

Quantification of Particle-Associated Viruses in Secondary Treated Wastewater Effluent.

Food Environ Virol

January 2025

Department of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Tulane University, 1440 Canal Street, Suite 2100, New Orleans, LA, 70112, USA.

Viruses can interact with a broad range of inorganic and organic particles in water and wastewater. These associations can protect viruses from inactivation by quenching chemical disinfectants or blocking ultraviolet light transmission, and a much higher dosage of disinfectants is required to inactivate particle-associated viruses than free viruses. There have been only few studies of the association of viruses with particles in wastewater, particularly in secondary treated effluent.
