New pyrazine (pz)- and 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy)-bridged octahedral hexanuclear rhenium(III) cluster dimers, [{Re(μ-S)Cl}(μ-L)] (L = pz, []; L = 4,4'-bpy, []), with 2 × 24 d-electrons {Re(24e)} were obtained in a single-step reaction via photoirradiation of [Re(μ-S)Cl] with L in a 2:1 ratio at room temperature. The {Re(23e)} dimers, [{Re(μ-S)Cl}(μ-L)] (L = pz, []; L = 4,4'-bpy, []), were synthesized through two-electron oxidation of [] and [], respectively. The single-crystal X-ray structures of [] and [] were determined, revealing structural distortion of the Re core of [] due to the Jahn-Teller effect. The cyclic voltammograms of [] and [] showed two steps of one-electron redox processes attributable to Re(23e)Re(24e)/{Re(24e)} and {Re(23e)}/Re(23e)Re(24e), respectively. The separation between the two redox potentials is small (0.056 V for [] and 0.039 V for []). The magnetic susceptibilities of [] and [] were almost temperature-independent, with values of 2.98 and 2.85 μ, respectively, indicating paramagnetism. These results suggest weak electronic interaction between two cluster units bridged by pz or 4,4'-bpy in the intercluster mixed valence state. The compounds [] and [] show photoluminescence in the near-infrared region at 296 K in the solid state.

An inorganic hexalanthanide-oxo-cluster-encapsulated antimotungstate, KNaH[Nd(OH)(HO)(B-α-SbWO)]·67HO (1), has been successfully synthesized by a facile one-step hydrothermal reaction method. The tetrahedron-shaped two-shell {Nd(OH)(HO)(B-α-SbWO)}(1a) polyanion is composed of a novel pure lanthanide-oxo {Nd(μ-OH)(HO)} octahedron and {(B-α-SbWO)} tetrahedron. After being effectively loaded onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by electrostatic adsorption using polydiallyldimethyl ammonium chloride (PDDA)-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), compound 1 exhibits electrochemical activity for the reduction of bromate ions with good selectivity, a high sensitivity of 186 μA mM and a detection limit that has reached 1.

Multifunctional single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have sparked great interest, but chiral SMMs obtained via spontaneous resolution are rarely reported. We synthesized a series of chiral trinuclear hepta-coordinate lanthanide complexes [ZnLn] ( for Dy, for Tb, for Gd, and for DyY) using the achiral flexible ligand HL (2,2'-[1,2-ethanediylbis[(ethylimino)methylene]]bis[3,5-dimethylphenol]). The complexes crystallize in the chiral 6 group space, and two enantiomers of different chirality are spontaneously resolved.

Lanthanide clusters with good stability and intriguing physical properties are attractive in many fields. By reacting 9-anthracenylphosphonic acid (AnPOH) and lanthanide nitrates under solvothermal conditions, we obtained a series of hexanuclear lanthanide phosphonate cages [HO][Ln(PO)(AnPO)(DMF)]·2DMF·HO (Ln6, Ln = Nd, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb). Within the cluster, the six Ln atoms form an octahedron and its eight faces are covered by phosphonate groups.

Exploiting efficient and practical catalysts for hydrolyzing organophosphorus nerve agents is significant and highly desirable. Herein, a new class of self-detoxifying composites, namely, halloysite nanotubes@NU-912 (HNTs@NU-912), HNTs@NU-912-I and HNTs@UiO-66-NH, is constructed by synthesis of hexanuclear zirconium cluster-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) NU-912, NU-912-I and UiO-66-NH, respectively, with HNTs, which are natural nanotubular materials consisting of Si-O-Si tetrahedral sheets on the outer surface and Al-OH octahedral sheets on the inner surface. The results show that crystalline Zr-MOFs uniformly cover the outer surface of HNTs and the particle size of Zr-MOFs is greatly reduced to less than 50 nm.
