Historical review: The golden age of the Golgi method in human neuropathology.

J Neuropathol Exp Neurol

May 2024

Department of Pathology and Experimental Therapeutics, University of Barcelona, Hospitalet de LLobregat, Spain.

Golgi methods were used to study human neuropathology in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s of the last century. Although a relatively small number of laboratories applied these methods, their impact was crucial by increasing knowledge about: (1) the morphology, orientation, and localization of neurons in human cerebral and cerebellar malformations and ganglionic tumors, and (2) the presence of abnormal structures including large and thin spines (spine dysgenesis) in several disorders linked to mental retardation, focal enlargements of the axon hillock and dendrites (meganeurites) in neuronal storage diseases, growth cone-like appendages in Alzheimer disease, as well as abnormal structures in other dementias. Although there were initial concerns about their reliability, reduced dendritic branches and dendritic spines were identified as common alterations in mental retardation, dementia, and other pathological conditions.

Aquatic environments are important sources of healthy and nutritious foods; however, clams, mussels, and oysters (the bivalves most consumed by humans) can pose considerable health risks to consumers if contaminated by heavy metals in polluted areas. These organisms can accumulate dangerously high concentrations of heavy metals (e.g.

Objectives: Lotus leaf is rich in flavonoids, and this study is aimed at examining the inhibitory effect of lotus leaf-enriched flavonoid extract (LLEFE) on HT-29 colon cancer cells through phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt) expression regulation.

Methods: Lotus leaves were extracted by ethanol and purified using FL-3 macroporous resin to create the LLEFE. HT-29 colon cancer cells were tested using various methods: their proliferation was observed by 3-(4,5)-dimethylthiahiazo(-z-y1)-3,5-di-phenytetrazoliumromide (MTT) assay, their survival status was observed by fluorescence staining, their oxidative stress level was observed by biochemical kits, and their mRNA expression was determined by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay.

The use of fluorescent proteins has revolutionized the study of protein localization and transport. However, the visualization of other molecules and specifically RNA during live-cell imaging remains challenging. In this chapter, we provide guidance to the available methods, their advantages and drawbacks as well as provide a detailed protocol for the detection of RNA transport using the MS2/PP7-split-Venus system for background-free RNA imaging.

Aptamer-based detection of fumonisin B1: A critical review.

Anal Chim Acta

May 2021

School of Food Science and Nutrition, University of Leeds, Leeds, LS2 9JT, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

Mycotoxin contamination is a current issue affecting several crops and processed products worldwide. Among the diverse mycotoxin group, fumonisin B1 (FB1) has become a relevant compound because of its adverse effects in the food chain. Conventional analytical methods previously proposed to quantify FB1 comprise LC-MS, HPLC-FLD and ELISA, while novel approaches integrate different sensing platforms and fluorescently labelled agents in combination with antibodies.
