AI Article Synopsis

  • Researchers studied 100 isolates from patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis in Panama collected between 2016 and 2022, identifying multiple Leishmania species and genetic variants present in the samples.
  • The study found the presence of the Leishmania RNA virus 1 (LRV-1) in 9% of the isolates, with specific cases recorded in various locations.
  • Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the LRV-1 isolates were mostly of genotype A, suggesting a connection between the virus's distribution and the geographical areas where the host species are found.

Article Abstract

() spp. can harbor a double-stranded RNA virus known as Leishmania RNA virus 1 (LRV-1), whose presence has been reported in nine countries across the Americas and seven species. Here, we studied 100 () isolates from patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis collected from different endemic areas in Panama from 2016 to 2022. We identified () , () , () hybrid, and () sp.1. (genetic variant). LRV-1 was detected by RT-PCR in 9% of isolates (eight cases in () , and one in () . Phylogenetic analysis based on sequencing data classified all LRV-1 isolates within genotype A, suggesting that LRV phylogenetic proximity is closely aligned with geographical distribution or to the phylogenetic proximity of the host in the case of the () and () in Panama.

Mammarenaviruses are noteworthy zoonotic pathogens, and the main reservoirs are rodent species. We report the detection of a novel mammarenavirus in 6/183 (3.3%) in necropsied European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) collected in Italy.

Few sources have reported empirical social contact data from resource-poor settings. To address this shortfall, we recruited 1,363 participants from rural and urban areas of Mozambique during the COVID-19 pandemic, determining age, sex, and relation to the contact for each person. Participants reported a mean of 8.
