Klotho plays a crucial role in the renal-protective effect of allopurinol on renal ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Department of Internal Medicine, Nephrology Ward, School of Medicine, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran. Electronic address:

Background: Allopurinol, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, recovers histological alterations and renal dysfunction induced during renal ischemic-reperfusion injury. This study investigated the cross-talk between the allopurinol and soluble Klotho.

Methods: Rats were randomly divided into three equal groups (n = 8 per group): The sham-operated group without renal ischemia, the BIR (bilateral ischemia-reperfusion) group which underwent renal ischemia, and BIR+Allo (allopurinol) group which was pretreated with allopurinol (100 mg/kg- gavage) 30 min before the renal ischemia.

Article Synopsis
  • Thyroid hormone is essential for many bodily functions, while α-Klotho is associated with aging and metabolic regulation; the study explores their relationship.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 4,614 adults from the NHANES database (2007-2012) using statistical models to examine how α-Klotho levels relate to thyroid hormone levels.
  • The findings indicate that higher α-Klotho levels correlate with increased FT3, TT3, and TT4 levels, but are linked to lower TSH levels, suggesting that α-Klotho could serve as a potential marker for thyroid function.

Aim: To determine biomarkers of anemia of chronic disease (ACD) in patients with glomerulonephritis (GN) in the early stages of CKD, to assess their role as risk factors for cardiovascular complications (CVС).

Materials And Methods: Seventy nine patients with GN were studied, among them: 40 with primary сhronic GN (CGN), 39 with secondary forms:19 - GN with ANCA-associated systemic vasculitis, 20 - GN with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) at early (all I-II) CKD stages. In all patients, the level of serum C-reactive protein (CRP), hepcidin, interferon γ, and the circulating form of protein Klotho (s-Klotho) were determined.
