Traditional electronics rely on charge currents for controlling and transmitting information, resulting in energy dissipation due to electron scattering. Over the last decade, magnons, quanta of spin waves, have emerged as a promising alternative. This perspective article provides a brief review of experimental and theoretical studies on quantum and hybrid magnonics resulting from the interaction of magnons with other quasiparticles in the GHz frequency range, offering insights into the development of functional magnonic devices. In this process, we discuss recent advancements in the quantum theory of magnons and their coupling with various types of qubits in nanoscale ferromagnets, antiferromagnets, synthetic antiferromagnets, and magnetic bulk systems. Additionally, we explore potential technological platforms that enable new functionalities in magnonics, concluding with future directions and emerging phenomena in this burgeoning field.

We have grown (111)- and (001)-oriented NiO thin films on (0001)-Sapphire and (001)-MgO substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD), respectively. DC magnetic susceptibility measurements underline that the Néel temperatures of the samples are beyond room-temperature. This is further confirmed by the presence of two-magnon Raman scattering modes in these films in ambient conditions.

In recent years, cavity optomagnonics has received considerable research interest, and the notions drawn from non-Hermitian physics have also attracted attention. Based on Faraday effect and Cotton-Mouton effect, we theoretically propose a scheme to realize exceptional point (EP) in a cavity optomagnonic system. The scheme relies on Brillouin scattering (BLS), i.

Orbital Current Pumping From Ultrafast Light-driven Antiferromagnetic Insulator.

The orbital Hall effect originating from light materials with weak spin-orbit coupling, has attracted considerable interest in spintronic applications. Recent studies demonstrate that orbital currents can be generated from charge currents through the orbital Hall effect in ferromagnetic materials. However, the generation of orbital currents in antiferromagnets has so far been elusive.

We propose a scheme to generate nonreciprocal entanglement and one-way steering between two distant ferrimagnetic microspheres in waveguide electromagnonics, where the magnon modes of two yttrium iron garnet (YIG) spheres are simultaneously coupled to each other through coherent and dissipative interactions. By matching the coherent interaction with its corresponding dissipative counterpart, unidirectional coupling between two magnon modes can be realized, and then in the presence of significant Kerr nonlinearities, we can obtain strong entanglement and one-way steering. Depending on the direction of the microwave propagation, the long-distance entanglement and steering can be generated nonreciprocally.

Extremely Large Anisotropy of Effective Gilbert Damping in Half-Metallic CrO.

Nano Lett

December 2024

International Center for Quantum Materials, School of Physics, Peking University, Beijing 100871, P.R. China.

Half-metals are a class of quantum materials with 100% spin polarization at the Fermi level and have attracted a lot of attention for future spintronic device applications. CrO is one of the most promising half-metal candidates for which the electrical and magnetic properties have been intensively studied in the last several decades. Here, we report the observation of a giant anisotropy (∼1600%) of effective Gilbert damping in the single-crystalline half-metallic (100)-CrO thin films, which is significantly larger than the values observed on conventional ferromagnetic Fe and CoFe thin films.
