Polyoxometalates (POMs) function as platforms for synthesizing structurally well-defined inorganic molecules with diverse structures, metals, compositions, and arrangements. Although post-editing of the oxygen sites of POMs has great potential for development of unprecedented structures, electronic states, properties, and applications, facile methods for site-selective substitution of the oxygen sites with other atoms remain limited. Herein, we report a direct site-selective oxygen-sulfur substitution method that enables transforming POMs [XWO] (X = Si, Ge) to Keggin-type polyoxothiometalates (POTMs) [XWOS] using sulfurizing reagents in an organic solvent. The resulting POTMs retain the original Keggin-type structure, with all 12 surface W[double bond, length as m-dash]O groups selectively converted to W[double bond, length as m-dash]S without sulfurization of other oxygen sites. These POTMs show high stability against water and O in organic solvents and a drastic change in the electronic states and redox properties. The findings of this study represent a facile method for converting POMs to POTMs, leading to the development of their unique properties and applications in diverse fields, including (photo)catalysis, sensing, optics, electronics, energy conversion, and batteries.

Despite their potential risks to human health and the environment at ng/L to μg/L concentrations, there has been relatively little effort to measure trace organic compounds (TOrCs) in surface waters of Central America. The concentrations of eighteen TOrCs detected at eleven surface water sites in the Lempa River basin of El Salvador and four sources of drinking water for the cities of San Salvador, Antiguo Cuscatlán, Soyapango, and Santa Tecla are reported here. All samples were analyzed via liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

In this study, we developed calcium alginate-coated nanovesicles derived from macrophage membranes loaded with berberine (Ber@MVs-CA) for the oral treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). Ber@MVs-CA demonstrates resistance to gastric acid and controlled drug release in the colonic pH environment, while actively targeting sites of ulcerative colitis injury. pH-responsive release of Ber in Ber@MVs-CA was confirmed through in vitro release experiments.

The persistence and ecological impact of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water sources necessitate effective and energy-efficient treatment solutions. This study introduces a novel approach using cerium dioxide (CeO) electrodes enhanced with oxygen vacancy (O) to catalyze the defluorination of PFAS. By leveraging the unique affinity between cerium and fluorine-containing species, our approach enables adsorptive preconcentration and catalytic degradation at low oxidation potentials (1.

Designing efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) under demanding acidic environments plays a critical role in advancing proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) catalysts with atomically dispersed metals have gained attention for their affordability, excellent catalytic performance, and distinctive features including consistent active sites and high atomic utilization. Over the past decade, significant achievements have been made in this field.

Understanding how TiO2 interacts with CO2 at the molecular level is crucial in the CO2 reduction toward value-added energy sources. Here, we report in-situ observations of the CO2 activation process on the reduced TiO2(110) surface at room temperature using ambient pressure scanning tunneling microscopy. We found that oxygen vacancies (Vo) diffuse dynamically along the bridging oxygen (Obr) rows of the TiO2(110) surface under ambient CO2(g) environments.
