The anesthesia gas scavenging system (AGSS) removes waste gases from the anesthesia machine. Within the AGSS, safety features prevent excessive pressures from affecting ventilation. Although the literature contains reports describing failures of the AGSS, we found no reports of positive-pressure relief valve (PPRV) malfunctions. We encountered 2 cases of extrinsic positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) resulting from a malfunctioning PPRV. Both cases suffered delayed identification intraoperatively but patients did not experience postoperative complications. These cases highlight the importance of daily scavenger system prechecks, the potential physiologic implications of AGSS malfunctions, and the importance of preplanned contingencies for machine failure.

Central nervous system (CNS) resident memory CD8 T cells (T) that express IFN-γ contribute to neurodegenerative processes, including synapse loss, leading to memory impairment. Here, we show that CCR2 signaling in CD8 T that persist within the hippocampus after recovery from CNS infection with West Nile virus (WNV) significantly prevents the development of memory impairments. Using CCR2-deficient mice, we determined that CCR2 expression is not essential for CNS T cell recruitment or virologic control during acute WNV infection.

Liver cancer, encompassing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and hepatoblastoma, the latter of which primarily occurs in early childhood, is the most common malignant tumor arising from liver and is responsible for a significant number of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Targeted drugs have been used for anti-liver cancer treatment in the advanced stage, while their efficacy is greatly compromised by development of drug resistance. Drug resistance is a complicated process regulated by intrinsic and extrinsic signals and has been associated with poorer prognosis in cancer patients.

Improving others' emotions is cognitively and emotionally demanding, potentially increasing stress levels and decreasing well-being. However, the opposite could also occur: Attempts at improving others' emotions-that is, extrinsic interpersonal emotion regulation-could enhance regulators' affective well-being and shield against physiological stress because we theorize that engaging in regulatory action to improve others' emotions can strengthen relationships, activate self-regulation, and elicit prosocial reward. In two studies, we test the consequences on regulators when they help others regulate their emotions.
