Compact polyelectrolyte complexes (CoPECs) can exhibit mechanical properties similar to those of biological tissues and other interesting properties, such as self-healing. To date, a variety of CoPECs prepared from synthetic polyelectrolytes have been investigated, but there are very few examples based entirely on biopolymers. We describe here an investigation of CoPECs based on poly(l-lysine) (PLL) with sodium hyaluronate (HA) and alginate (Alg). A 2:1 ratio of cation:anion and 0.25 M NaBr was beneficial for the formation of viscoelastic PLL-HA CoPECs, with the favorable ratio attributed to the spacing of carboxylates on HA being one every two saccharide units. In contrast, 1.0 M NaBr and a 1:1 ratio were better for PLL-Alg CoPECs. Both CoPECs swelled or retained a constant volume when immersed in hypertonic media, but contracted in hypotonic media. The loading of molecules into the PLL-HA (2:1) CoPECs was investigated. Higher loadings were achieved for anionic molecules compared to cations, presumably due to the excess cationic binding sites on the networks. The times required for full release of the molecules ranged from less than 2 h for neutral paracetamol to about 48 h for crystal violet and diclofenac.

Eukaryotic DNA is packaged in the cell nucleus into chromatin, composed of arrays of DNA-histone protein octamer complexes, the nucleosomes. Over the past decade, it has become clear that chromatin structure in vivo is not a hierarchy of well-organized folded nucleosome fibers but displays considerable conformational variability and heterogeneity. In vitro and in vivo studies, as well as computational modeling, have revealed that attractive nucleosome-nucleosome interaction with an essential role of nucleosome stacking defines chromatin compaction.

Lignin-based nanoparticles hold tremendous potential for various applications. This study proposes an innovative and straightforward method for the synthesis of spherical hybrid lignin nanoparticles (hy-LNPs) with a tunable pore structure. The approach involves blending lignin with 20 wt% polyamide-epichlorohydrin, resulting in the formation of thermoresponsive lignin-based polyelectrolyte complexes.

This study introduces a green method for preparing self-assembly hydrogels via polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) coacervation using chitosan, sulphated polysaccharides (chondroitin sulphate or fucoidan), and hydrolyzed collagen, followed by treatments, such as centrifugation, nanocellulose incorporation, algal fucoidan substitution, freezing-thawing, saline solution addition, and dialysis. Chitosan alters the non-gelling characteristics of chondroitin sulphate, fucoidan, and hydrolyzed collagen, initiating quick gelling. This study compared the effects of biopolymer concentrations, pHs, and treatments on hydrogel properties.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) stands as a chronic inflammatory intestinal disease. This study aimed to explore a sustained-release strategy to alleviate DSS-induced colitis in mice using polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) encapsulating an alkaloid, isoliensinine (ISO). The drug delivery platform, termed "Saloplastics (SAL)", was prepared by fabrication of PECs through the solid-liquid phase separation of sodium caseinate (SC) and ε-polylysine (EPL), followed by centrifugation to yield compact structures.

Molecular weight (Mw) of ligand-mediated nanocarriers plays a pivotal role in their architecture and properties. In this study, self-assembled ovalbumin (OVA)-loaded nanoparticles were meticulously engineered by starch polyelectrolytes with different Mw. Results unveiled that, tailoring Mw of GRGDS pentapeptides-grafted carboxymethyl starch (G-CMS) displayed strong binding-affinity and transport efficiency through microfold cells (M cells) pathway in the simulated intestinal epithelial cell monolayer in which M cells were randomly located in the Caco-2 cells monolayer.
