Utilizing Rhythmic Haptic Cueing in Arm Swing Training to Improve Gait Speed Among Older Adults.

Ann Biomed Eng

December 2024

Department of Mechanical Engineering, The Biorobotics and Biomechanics Lab, University of Maine, 168 College Ave, Orono, ME, 04469, USA.

Purpose: Current gait rehabilitation protocols for older adults typically attempt to effect changes in leg movements, while the role of arm movements is often ignored despite evidence of the neurological coupling of the upper and lower extremities. In the present work, we examine the effectiveness of a novel wearable haptic cueing system that targets arm swing to improve various gait parameters in older adults.

Methods: Twenty participants (  years) were recruited to analyze their gait during normal and fast walking without haptic cueing.

Introduction: Moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects a large segment of the US population and is characterized by repetitive and reversible obstruction of the upper airway during sleep. Untreated OSA is associated with increased incidence of heart attack, stroke, and motor vehicle accidents due to sleepiness. Continuous positive airway pressure is often prescribed, but most patients with OSA are nonadherent.

Silicon-Enhanced PVA Hydrogels in Flexible Sensors: Mechanism, Applications, and Recycling.

Gels

December 2024

Research Institute of Polymer Materials, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Shandong University, Jinan 250061, China.

Hydrogels, known for their outstanding water absorption, flexibility, and biocompatibility, have been widely utilized in various fields. Nevertheless, their application is still limited by their relatively low mechanical performance. This study has successfully developed a dual-network hydrogel with exceptional mechanical properties by embedding amino-functionalized polysiloxane (APSi) networks into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix.

In recent advancements within sensing technology, driven by the Internet of Things (IoT), significant impacts are observed on health sector applications, notably through wearable electronics like electronic tattoos (e-tattoos). These e-tattoos, designed for direct contact with the skin, facilitate precise monitoring of vital physiological parameters, including body heat, a critical indicator for conditions such as inflammation and infection. Monitoring these indicators can be crucial for early detection of chronic conditions, steering toward proactive healthcare management.
