Background: Understanding the impact of malnutrition on innate immune response in Plasmodium falciparum (Pf)-infected subjects is critical for malaria control.

Aims And Objectives: This study aims to investigate the nutritional status and innate immune response of Pf-infected subjects in Lagos, Nigeria.

Materials And Methods: A total of 1183 patients with a history of fever or axillary temperature ≥37°C were screened microscopically for Pf at Ijede General Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria. Malnutrition was determined according to the U.S National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) as stunting, wasting, or underweight when the Z-score is <-2 in the participants aged <20 years. Serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and IL-12 were determined by capture ELISA while hematological parameters were measured using an automated hematology system.

Results: A total of 384 volunteers were positive for Pf, of which 114 were <20 years with a median age of 10 years. Overall malaria prevalence was 20.89%. The malnutrition rate was 89.5%; 24 (21.05%) were stunted, 30 (26.32%) were underweight, and 48 (42.11%) were wasted. Pro-inflammatory cytokine responses were not affected by the type of malaria. TNF-α was higher in participants <5 years (P = 0.001) and in malnourished patients (P < 0.05).

Conclusion: Together, it could be deduced that nutritional status influences Plasmodium falciparum malaria outcomes and progression pattern.

Introduction: Burkina Faso is facing a serious public health problem of chronic malnutrition and mortality in children under the age of 5. To tackle this situation, a number of child nutrition interventions have been implemented. This study aims to assess the impact of these interventions on the nutritional status of children aged 0-5 years between 2018 and 2022.

Background: Malnutrition is a significant risk factor for decreased survival in cancer patients undergoing a pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). Our study aims to investigate the impact of immunonutrition on length of stay (LOS), infection rates, postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF), and delayed gastric emptying (DGE).

Study Design: This study retrospectively reviewed 344 patients who underwent PD between 2007 and 2018.

Purpose: Optimal management of retroperitoneal soft tissue sarcoma (RPS) often requires extensive tumor resections, frequently involving gastrointestinal organs. The impact of these procedures on the nutritional status and hemoglobin (Hb) levels of RPS patients remain unexplored. In this study, we aimed to evaluate preoperative nutritional status as well as the prevalence of anemia in RPS patients, and to investigate longitudinal changes throughout the disease course in order to identify potential strategies for prehabilitation.

Objectives: Preventing malnutrition during chemoradiation (CRT) for head and neck cancer is critical maximizing quality of life (QOL). We sought to assess patient-reported QOL outcomes after integrating exclusive liquid meal replacement with Soylent, a novel meal replacement agent, in patients with head and neck cancer undergoing CRT.

Methods: Patients undergoing definitive or adjuvant concurrent CRT for locally advanced head and neck cancer enrolled on our single-institution, prospective phase II protocol evaluating nutritional replacement with Soylent.

Introduction: Malnutrition contributes to approximately 45% of deaths among under 5 years children in low and middle-income countries. Poor maternal knowledge and failure to comply with recommended Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices are known risk factors for malnutrition but there are inconsistencies in the literature. Therefore, this cross-sectional study of 100 mother-child pairs in district Gujranwala aimed to assess maternal nutritional literacy (MNL) and maternal feeding practices (MFP) and their ultimate impacts on child growth.
