NOVEL (SIMPLEXVIRUS DOLICHOTINEALPHA1) ASSOCIATED WITH FATALITY IN FOUR PATAGONIAN MARA ().

J Zoo Wildl Med

June 2024

Department of Comparative, Diagnostic & Population Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL 32608, USA.

Four of seven Patagonian maras () at a zoological institution developed acute neurologic signs that progressed to tetraparesis and death. All affected were young adult females (10 mon-5 yr old) that presented over 11 d. Clinical signs were rapidly progressive and unresponsive to supportive therapies.

Article Synopsis
  • Macropodid alphaherpesvirus 2 (MaAHV2) has been linked to outbreaks in captive marsupials in Australia and is observed for the first time in Virginia and water opossums.
  • Both opossums showed severe liver and lung damage, along with signs of sepsis, leading to their deaths within weeks.
  • Genetic testing revealed that the herpesvirus found in the opossums was over 99% identical to MaAHV2, suggesting that these species can become infected, which raises concerns for zoos with mixed-species animal populations.

A 23-year-old domestic donkey (Equus asinus) referred for severe respiratory distress due to suspected equine asthma. Ultrasound of the chest revealed bilateral irregular pulmonary consolidation and pleural effusion. Airway endoscopy and tracheal wash cytology showed severe neutrophilic inflammation and bacterial culture was positive for Streptococcus equi subsp.

Viral codon optimization on SARS-CoV-2 Spike boosts immunity in the development of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines.

Life-long persistent herpesviruses carry "trans-inducers" to overcome the unusual codon usage of their glycoproteins for efficient expression. Strikingly, this "trans-inducibility" can be achieved by simply changing the codon-usage of acute virus glycoproteins to that of persistent herpesvirus glycoproteins with herpesviral trans-inducer. Here, we apply the "persistent viral codon-usage-trans-inducer" principle to SARS-CoV-2 Spike mRNA vaccine platform, in which the codon-usage of Spike is changed to that of Herpes Simplex Virus-1 (HSV-1) glycoprotein B (gB) with its "trans-inducer" ICP27.
