Impact of neighborhood income inequality on adolescents' mental health. Results from the STARS study.

Health Place

December 2024

School of Public Health and Community Medicine, Institute of Medicine, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Over recent decades, there has been a simultaneous increase in income inequality and adverse mental health outcomes among adolescents in Western countries and especially in Sweden. Prior research on the relationship between income inequality and mental health has primarily focused on studies involving adults, yielding diverse findings regarding the nature of their association. Given the importance of relationships and comparisons to peers in immediate vicinity, we aimed to investigate the impact of neighborhood income inequality on mental health problems among seven-graders in Western Sweden.

Caymanostellidae is a group of rarely collected and morphologically unusual sea stars that have been exclusively encountered on wood falls in the deep sea. There are currently three genera and seven species described, occurring in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans with a depth range between 418 and 6780 m. Three new species are here described from specimens collected from wood falls in multiple localities across the Pacific margin of Costa Rica and near the Gulf of California (Mexico): Caymanostella scrippscognaticausa sp.

Lie symmetries in higher dimensional charged radiating stars.

Heliyon

October 2024

Astrophysics Research Centre, School of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Private Bag X54001, Durban 4000, South Africa.

This study investigates the Lie symmetry properties of matter variables, spacetime dimension, and kinematic quantities in spherically symmetric radiating stars undergoing gravitational collapse in higher dimensional spacetimes. Our analysis explores how variations in functions and dependent variables influence the Lie algebra dimensionality and Lie symmetries of the boundary condition. Our study reveals the explicit dependence of charge and spacetime dimension in the Lie symmetry generators for the first time.

Uncovering language deficits in focal epilepsy: Beyond the limits of noun naming and verbal fluency.

Epilepsy Behav

December 2024

Queensland Aphasia Research Centre, University of Queensland, Queensland Australia; School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Queensland, Queensland, Australia; Surgical Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS) Education and Research Alliance, The University of Queensland and Metro North Health, Queensland, Australia; Centre of Research Excellence in Aphasia Recovery and Rehabilitation, La Trobe University, Victoria, Australia.

Background: A range of language impairments have been reported in people with epilepsy both pre- and post-surgically, however language is not routinely comprehensively assessed in epilepsy clinics. When language is assessed, this is typically as part of a broader neuropsychological battery of assessment, often limited to tests of noun naming and/or verbal fluency, despite evidence to suggest these tests are not sufficiently sensitive to detect the often-subtle deficits present in chronic focal epilepsy. Many areas of language function, including the production of connected speech, have also not been adequately explored in this population, and research relating to subjective report of language and communication difficulties is limited.

Mechano-induced keratinocyte hyperproliferation is reported to be associated with various skin diseases. Enhanced cell proliferation often requires the active metabolism of nutrients to produce energy. However, how keratinocytes adapt their cellular metabolism homeostasis to mechanical cues remains unclear.
