Published: September 2024

This study aimed to develop and validate a multi-mycotoxin analysis method applied to cashew nuts by employing a miniaturized QuEChERS method followed by determination by ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). Satisfactory recoveries for the concentrations 1, 10 and 30 ng g, ranging from 66% (fumonisin B) to 110% (ochratoxin A) and relative standard deviations lower than 9% (fumonisin B) were obtained for the target compounds. Limits of quantification ranged from 0.004 ng g (sterigmatocystin) to 0.59 ng g (alternariol). The applicability of the analytical method was verified by analyzing 30 cashew nut samples from the city of Rio de Janeiro, RJ, southeastern Brazil. Aflatoxins M1, G2, G1, B2, B1, ochratoxin A and sterigmatocystin were detected, respectively, in 27%, 10%, 17%, 30%, 30%, 30% and 50% of the analyzed samples, at maximum concentrations of 0.56, 0.67, 1.43, 2.02, 4.93, 4.81, and 0.35 ng g. The maximum limit established by Brazilian legislation for aflatoxins was not exceeded by any of the analyzed samples.

Background: Furfurals, key derivatives of Maillard reactions commonly found in everyday foods, have been identified as having significant toxic effects on human health. Excessive intake of furfurals can lead symptoms such as weight loss, poor nutrient metabolism which followed by disease occurrence. The severe carcinogenicity, mutagenicity and genotoxicity of furfurals were well recognized recently.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University, Shenyang 110004, China. Electronic address:

Chlorophenols (CPs) are widely used in industries such as petrochemicals, insecticides, pharmaceuticals, synthetic dyes and wood preservatives. However, owing to the improper discharge and disposal, they have become major contaminants that are ubiquitously distributed in water, soil, and sewage sediments, posing a significant threat to ecosystems and human health. Consequently, accurate, sensitive and effective pretreatment and analysis methods for CPs are urgently required and have been actively explored in recent years.

Since the last decades, light has been shed on the pollution of aquatic ecosystems. Considering apolar compounds in water, analysis of the dissolved phase is not sufficient due to their possible bioaccumulation. Additional analysis of sediments, biota, or sentinel species is necessary.

The expansion of monocultures to regions close to conservation areas has put biodiversity at risk, mainly due to the intense use of pesticides. Anurans are highly susceptible to pesticides and may be a biological marker in the contamination of an area. However, methods for determining pesticides in anurans are incipient.
