Mpox, previously referred to as monkeypox, was recently deemed a public health emergency in 2022. Our understanding of potential secondary cutaneous manifestations in the setting of this infection is still evolving. We report a rare case of a man who presented with erythematous, painful subcutaneous nodules on his extremities in the setting of recent mpox infection. Biopsy of a lesion from the lower legs revealed a lobular panniculitis with lupus panniculitis-like features on pathology. He was ultimately diagnosed with a unique case of reactive panniculitis secondary to mpox.

This retrospective study aims to analyze demographics, clinicopathological findings, laboratory results, and treatment outcomes of NV in a non-TB endemic country.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies on the histopathology of erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) are lacking, which this research aims to address by describing its histopathological characteristics.
  • A total of 125 biopsies were analyzed, revealing various infiltration patterns with the most common being a well-defined dermal infiltrate, observed in over half of the samples, along with varying degrees of subcutaneous tissue involvement.
  • The findings highlighted the presence of immune cells like neutrophils and foamy histiocytes, with some cases showing acid-fast bacilli using specific staining techniques, although limitations included the retrospective nature of the study which hindered comparisons with clinical characteristics.
