Selenium, an essential trace mineral for health, has seen a rise in clinical trials over the past nearly 5 decades. Our aim here is to provide a comprehensive and concise overview of selenium clinical trials from 1976 to 2023. Overall, the evolution of selenium clinical trials over 48 years has advanced through phases of emergence, prosperity, and either stability or transition.

Multifunctional selenium-doped carbon dots for modulating Alzheimer's disease related toxic ions, inhibiting amyloid aggregation and scavenging reactive oxygen species.

Article Synopsis
  • β-Amyloid deposition, oxidative stress, and metal ion imbalance are key features of Alzheimer's disease, creating a need for effective multi-target therapies.
  • Researchers developed multifunctional selenium-doped carbonized polymer dots (SeCDs) to inhibit Aβ aggregation, reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS), and chelate copper ions.
  • SeCDs successfully clear harmful radicals and bind Cu ions, lowering cytotoxicity related to Aβ-Cu complexes, and show promise as a treatment option by reducing intracellular ROS levels.

Imbalances in several trace elements related to antioxidant function may lead to autism spectrum disorder (ASD)-related physiological dysfunction. Nonetheless, contradictory results have been found on the connection between these elements and ASD, and studies of their joint effects and interactions have been insufficient. We therefore designed a case-control study of 152 ASD children and 152 age- and sex-matched typically developing (TD) children to explore the individual and combined associations of manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and selenium (Se) with ASD.

Conversion-type selenium cathodes are considered a highly promising alternative to sulfur cathodes due to their high conductivity and similar theoretical capacity. However, stress-diffusion and shuttle effects during the conversion process remain significant challenges that urgently need to be addressed. Herein, a composite matrix of MoSe anchored on the surface of N-doped hollow mesoporous carbon nanospheres (NHMCNS) was designed as a Se host to construct Se/C cathodes (Se/MoSe@NHMCNS).

Exploring micronutrients and microbiome synergy: pioneering new paths in cancer therapy.

Front Immunol

December 2024

Department of Biotechnology, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Bennett University, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India.

The human microbiome is the complex ecosystem consisting of trillions of microorganisms that play a key role in developing the immune system and nutrient metabolism. Alterations in the gut microbiome have been linked to cancer initiation, progression, metastasis, and response to treatment. Accumulating evidence suggests that levels of vitamins and minerals influence the gut environment and may have implications for cancer risk and progression.
