Exploring the alteration of environmental radioactivity in terms of compositional elements of heavy minerals in an anthropogenically affected urban river: Radiological and ecological risks assessment. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

This study explored the alteration of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs: Ra (≈U), Th, K) in an anthropogenically disrupted urban river-basin (Turag, Bangladesh) in terms of constitutional substances (Sc, Ti, V, Fe, La, Ce, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, W, Th, U) of heavy-minerals. Average activity concentrations of Ra (≈U), Th, and K were 41.5 ± 12.9, 72.1 ± 27.1, and 639 ± 100 Bqkg, respectively which were relatively higher compared to crustal origin. ∑REEs, Ta, W, Th, and U were ~2 times higher compared to crustal values with Ce and Eu-anomalies. APCS-MLR and PMF receptor models were used to determine the various anthropogenic and/or geogenic sources of NORMs and elements. Layer-wise variations of NORMs and elements were observed to trace the response of sedimentary processes towards the incoming pollution load. Presence of REEs indicates moderate degree of ecological risk to aquatic biota. However, carcinogenic risk (3.84 × 10 Sv) were significantly higher than threshold limit.

Background: Nicastrin, a subunit of the γ-secretase complex, is encoded by the NCSTN gene and regulates notch signaling, it is involved in the pathogenesis of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), Alzheimer disease (AD), and liver cancer. However, the animal models for studying HS are relatively scarce.

Methods: CRISPR/Cas-mediated genetic engineering was used to generate targeted knockout offspring mice (C57BL/6J).

Background: The stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR) has been established as a predictor of unfavorable outcomes across various diseases. However, its relationship with prognosis in patients with cardiogenic shock (CS) remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the association between SHR and outcomes in CS patients.

Background: Pneumococcal disease, caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, imposes a significant global health burden, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as the elderly and immunocompromised. The 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) is designed to protect against 23 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae. However, there is ongoing debate about its effectiveness in reducing all-cause mortality.

Gliomas are the most common tumors of the central nervous system, with glioblastoma (GBM) being particularly aggressive and fatal. Current treatments for GBM, including surgery and chemotherapy, are limited by tumor aggressiveness and the blood-brain barrier. Therefore, understanding the molecular mechanisms driving GBM growth is essential.

Infection prevention and control (IPC) programs form the basis of minimizing spread of pathogens in the healthcare setting and beyond. The COVID-19 pandemic amplified the demand for IPC. However, the environmental impact of IPC practices has yet to be addressed and attempts to quantify its climate implications have been sparse.
