Introduction: Myo-inositol (MI) is the most abundant inositol found in nature. To date MI supplementation is reported to be effective in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome, it is also suggested to alleviate the symptoms of diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders, but to date no statistically significant effects of inositol on depressive and anxiety symptoms were proven. In the study of anxiolytic effects in zebrafish, we often use the thigmotaxis index measuring the ratio of the amount of time the animal spends near the walls compared to the entire arena.

Aim: The objective of this paper was to examine the effect of MI on zebrafish embryos' locomotor activity, as well as its potential anxiolytic activity in zebrafish larvae.

Material And Methods: In the first part of the experiment, the embryos were incubated with 5, 10, 20, and 40 mg/mL MI. 1-day post fertilization, embryo mobility was evaluated and burst activity was calculated. In the next part of the study, the behavior of 5-day-old larvae was tested.

Results: Tests on embryo movement showed an increase in burst activity in the MI group at concentrations of 40 mg/mL ( < 0.0001) and a slight decrease in the group at concentrations of 10 mg/mL ( < 0.05). MI in the light/dark challenge had no impact on the thigmotaxis index.

Conclusions: MI was shown to not affect stress reduction in zebrafish larvae. Further research on the potential of MI and other stereoisomers is needed.

Objectives: Our aim was to evaluate the comparative effects of sertraline and vortioxetine against stress-induced brain injury in rats.

Methods: The rats were assigned to a nonstress group (NSG), stress-treated control (StC), sertraline + stress (SSt), and vortioxetine + stress (VSt) groups. Sertraline and vortioxetine (10 mg/kg) were given orally by gavage to the SSt and VSt groups.

CBD and the 5-HT1A receptor: A medicinal and pharmacological review.

Biochem Pharmacol

January 2025

Department of Biomedical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Houton, Houston, TX, 77204, USA. Electronic address:

Cannabidiol (CBD), a phytocannabinoid, has emerged as a promising candidate for addressing a wide array of symptoms. It has the ability to bind multiple proteins and receptors, including 5-HT1AR, transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), and cannabinoid receptors. However, CBD's pharmacodynamic interaction with 5-HT1AR and its medicinal outcomes are still debated.

Purpose: Prior evidence suggests that patients' Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) worsens after COVID-19. This study aimed to investigate HRQoL in Italian patients post-hospitalization for COVID-19, focusing on changes in physical and mental HRQoL over time since COVID-19 diagnosis.

Methods: A cohort of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 at Molinette Hospital in Turin, Italy, was contacted post-discharge to assess HRQoL using the SF-36 questionnaire.

Sigma-1 Receptor as a Novel Therapeutic Target in Diabetic Kidney Disease.

Int J Mol Sci

December 2024

MTA-SE Lendület "Momentum" Diabetes Research Group, 1083 Budapest, Hungary.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease. Current treatments for DKD do not halt renal injury progression, highlighting an urgent need for therapies targeting key disease mechanisms. Our previous studies demonstrated that activating the Sigma-1 receptor (S1R) with fluvoxamine (FLU) protects against acute kidney injury by inhibiting inflammation and ameliorating the effect of hypoxia.

Dexmedetomidine (DEX) is a selective alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist with sedative and anxiolytic properties. Increasing evidence reports that DEX has a neuroprotective effect. In this study, we investigated the potential effects of DEX on learning and memory functions in rats with experimental cognitive impairment.
