A new binuclear Gd(III) complex, [Gd(L)(Phen)]·4HO, was synthesized via the reaction of gadolinium(III) nitrate hexahydrate, 4-acetylphenoxyacetic acid (HL), NaOH, and 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) in a solution of water-ethanol (: = 1:1). The Gd(III) complex was characterized using IR, UV-vis, TG-DSC, fluorescence, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The results showed that the Gd(III) complex crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group -1, and each Gd(III) ion was coordinated with two nitrogen atoms (N1, N2, or N1a, and N2a) from two Phen ligands and seven oxygen atoms (O1, O2, O7a, O9, O8, O8a, O10a, or O1a, O2a, O7, O8, O8a, O9a, and O10) from six L ligands, respectively, forming a nine-coordinated coordination mode. The Gd(III) complex molecules formed a one-dimensional chained and three-dimensional network structure via benzenering π-π stacking. The Hirschfeld surface analysis and the calculations of the electron density distributions of the frontier molecular orbitals of the Gd(III) complex were performed. The catalytic activities of the photocatalytic CO reduction and benzyl alcohol oxidation using the Gd(III) complex as a catalyst were performed. The results of the photocatalytic CO reduction showed that the yield and the selectivity of CO reached 41.5 μmol/g and more than 99% after four hours, respectively. The results of the benzyl alcohol oxidation showed that the yield of benzaldehyde was 45.7% at 120 °C with THF as the solvent under 0.5 MPa O within 2 h.

Spin labels based on Gd complexes are important tools for the elucidation of the structure, dynamics and interaction of biomolecules by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Their EPR spectroscopic properties line width and relaxation times influence their performance in a particular application. To be able to apply a complex well-suited for a specific application, a set of Gd complexes with different EPR spectroscopic properties ready-made for spin labeling will be highly useful.

MR Imaging Reveals Dynamic Aggregation of Multivalent Glycoconjugates in Aqueous Solution.

Departments of Chemistry, Molecular Biosciences, Neurobiology, and Radiology, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois 60208, United States.

Glycoconjugates forming from the conjugation of carbohydrates to other biomolecules, such as proteins, lipids, or other carbohydrates, are essential components of mammalian cells and are involved in numerous biological processes. Due to the capability of sugars to form multiple hydrogen bonds, many synthetic glycoconjugates are desirable biocompatible platforms for imaging, diagnostics, drugs, and supramolecular self-assemblies. Herein, we present a multimeric galactose functionalized paramagnetic gadolinium (Gd(III)) chelate that displays spontaneous dynamic aggregation in aqueous conditions.

We have prepared and structurally characterized pivalate based {Cr Ln } complexes with Ln = Dy and Gd as well as the Y analogue, with the overall formula [Cr Ln (mdea)(piv)(OH)], Ln = Gd, Dy and Y. We are reporting a detailed experimental magnetic properties study, including magnetization relaxation dynamics and calorimetric data, supported with quantum chemical calculations. The synthesis of the Y derivative, allowed to precisely identify the Cr(III)-Cr(III) exchange interaction magnitude which proved moderately strong and in agreement with known magneto-structural correlations.

A relatively unexplored approach in heterometallic chemistry of transition metals and lanthanides has been developed toward the controlled synthesis of a new family of linear heterotrinuclear Ln(III)-Pd(II)-Ln(III) complexes with the general formula [LnPd(pao)(NO)(MeOH)(HO)]·[Pd(pao)], where Ln = Dy (2), Gd (3), Er (4) and Yb (5). This strategy was based on the diamagnetic 'metalloligand' [Pd(pao)] (1), where pao is the anion of 2-pyridinealdoxime, containing two dangling oximate O-atoms which were to each other and available for binding with oxophilic lanthanide ions. Because of their -configuration, the [Pd(pao)] 'metalloligand' was able to direct the binding of two {Ln(NO)(MeOH)(HO)} units on opposite sites, thus yielding the reported trinuclear {Ln-Pd-Ln} clusters.

The utilization of lanthanide (Ln) complexes in the realm of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) has garnered extensive interest, particularly in their role as luminescent materials or electron trappers. A series of gadolinium (Gd) complexes with energy levels of high HOMO/LUMO and different triplet state energies were designed and synthesized by introducing substituents with different electronic effects onto the pyrazolone derivative ligands. Subsequently, these complexes were precisely purified by vacuum sublimation and codoped into the light-emitting layer (EML) of the OLEDs.
