In Europe, is the most prevalent species, and this protozoan is transmitted by phlebotomine sandflies. A recent publication has shown that sheep harbor antibodies. This raises questions about the epidemiological role of small ruminants. Therefore, sera from small ruminants located in two southern German federal states, Baden-Wuerttemberg (BW) and Bavaria (BAV), were analyzed with an ELISA to determine the presence of antibodies. The species, sex and age (gimmer vs. ewe) were recorded, and a univariate analysis was conducted to determine possible associations. In total, seven sheep flocks (274 sheep/10 goats) from BW and seven sheep flocks (277 sheep/78 goats) from BAV were examined. In BW, four sheep from three flocks tested positive for antibodies. In BAV, the same number of positive sheep were detected but in four flocks. The total seropositivity rate in sheep was 1.45%. All goats tested negative. No significant association ( > 0.05) was detected between seropositivity and the variables evaluated. Our study reveals the exposure of sheep to in a non-endemic area. Further investigation is needed to determine whether sheep can be used as sentinels to identify new phlebotomine habitats and risk areas.

Deciphering the colostral-immunity transfer: from mammary gland to neonates small intestine.

Vet Res Commun

January 2025

Laboratory of Agricultural Animal Genetics, Breeding and Reproduction of Ministry of Education, Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan, China.

Colostrum, the initial mammary secretion produced by various mammals following birth, is a conduit for maternal immunity transfer in diverse mammalian species. Concurrently, many cellular processes are occurring in the neonatal small intestine to prepare it to receive molecular signals from a superfood essential for the neonate's health and development. During the prepartum colostrum secretion, the newborn intestine undergoes transient alterations in the intestinal barrier, primarily regulating immunoglobulin absorption.

Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) supports a plethora of biodiversity with a unique assemblage of many charismatic and endemic species. We assessed the genetic diversity, demographic history, and habitat suitability of blue sheep (Pseudois nayaur) in the IHR through the analysis of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region (CR) and Cytochrome b gene, and 14 ecological predictor variables. We observed high genetic divergence and designated them into two genetic lineage groups, i.

Melanoma is among the most common malignancies and has recently exhibited increased resistance to treatments, resulting in a more aggressive disease course. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) secrete cytokines both in vivo and in vitro, which regulate tumor cell signaling pathways and the tumor microenvironment, thereby influencing tumor progression. This study investigates the anti-melanogenesis effects of sheep umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (SUCMSCs) to assess their potential application in melanoma treatment.

Identification of Gene Expression, Evolution, and Potential Functional Sites in Horn Development of Sheep.

Int J Mol Sci

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Animal Biotech Breeding, Institute of Animal Science, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), Beijing 100193, China.

The growth and development of horns are primarily controlled by the skin. The gene is crucial for epidermal barrier function and may have a significant impact on horn growth. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression of across different sheep breeds and tissues by utilizing RNA sequencing.

Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and Cadmium (Cd) affect female reproduction. To date, toxicological research has focused on the effects of individual contaminants, whereas living beings are exposed to mixtures. This study analyzed the effects of a DEHP/Cd mixture on nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation of sheep cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) compared with single compounds.
