Mentorship is now recognized as essential to the personal and professional development of physicians. Over the past decade, it has become a common theme in medical education literature, and through this our understanding of mentorship has evolved. Despite this progress, we believe that the prevailing reductionist view of mentorship is oversimplified and may hinder further advances in this space. Instead, we propose that mentorship be viewed through the lens of complexity theory, positioning it as a prototypical complex adaptive system. This shift in perspective will inform our mentorship interventions evaluations, and can avoid the disappointment that invariably follows when we apply a simple approach to a complex situation.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council's (SSSA), introduced in 2018, shifted from a mentorship model to a coaching model, creating new roles for practice supervisors, assessors, and academic assessors. This study explores the experiences of nursing students, practice assessors, and supervisors working with the SSSA. Background: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a valuable skill for generalist physicians, nurse practitioners (NPs), and nurses; however, its utilization remains limited. This study was performed to investigate the current status, barriers, and facilitators of POCUS implementation among physicians, NPs, and nurses in family and hospital medicine in Japan and to identify differences in influencing factors between physicians and NPs/nurses.

Results: A web-based survey was distributed via the mailing lists of four major academic societies in general medicine in Japan-the Japanese Society of Hospital General Medicine, the Japan Primary Care Association, the Japanese Association for Home Care Medicine, and the Japan Society of Nurse Practitioner-from April to June 2024.

The 2011 report outlined several recommendations for transforming undergraduate biology education, sparking multiple pedagogical reform efforts. Among these was the Promoting Active Learning and Mentoring (PALM) network, an NSF-funded program that provided mentorship and training to instructors on implementing active learning in the classroom. Here, we provide a perspective on how members of the biology education community in PALM view the recommendations of , drawing upon our experiences both as members of PALM and as leaders of an associated project funded by another NSF grant that hosted PALM alumni at various conferences.
