This research assessed the quantitative and qualitative reactions of commercially grown sugar beets to four different harvest dates and their yield stability. The study followed a split-plot design within a randomized complete block design over 3 years. The main plot involved 10 sugar beet cultivars, while the subplot involved four harvest dates: August 13 (HD), September 7 (HD), October 3 (HD), and November 12 (HD). The study found that environmental conditions, genotypes, and harvest dates significantly affected various traits of sugar beet. Yearly environmental variations and their interactions with genotypes and harvest dates had substantial impacts on all measured traits at the 1% probability level. Additive main effect and multiplicative interaction analysis based on white sugar yield indicated that genotype and environment's additive effects, as well as the genotype-environment interaction, were significant at 1% probability level. Shokoufa and Arya, which exhibit high white sugar yield (WSY) and low first interaction principal component (IPC) values, are identified as desirable due to their stability across different environments. Among the harvest dates in different years, the fourth and third dates showed a higher yield than the total average. Perfekta and Ekbatan exhibited high specific adaptability. According to the multi-trait stability index, Arta, Arya and Sina were recognized as stable and superior across all measured traits.

Vapour heat as a potential means of controlling insects in stored dates.

Bull Entomol Res

January 2025

Department of Date Palm Pests and Diseases, Central Laboratory for Date Palm, Agricultural Research Centre (ARC), Giza, Egypt.

Post-harvest treatments are very critical in accepting the exported dates. However, stored dates are attacked by a wide range of stored pests causing serious damage to yield. Therefore, this study investigated the efficacy of treating stored dates variety Siwi with vapour heat on almond moth (Walker), the Indian meal moth (Hübner), the saw-toothed grain beetle Linnaeus, the red flour beetle (Herbst), and the drugstore beetle (L.

Article Synopsis
  • Unfavorable weather conditions negatively affect the natural ripening of date fruits, leading to significant waste.
  • The study explored how artificial ripening, specifically using hot water immersion for various time intervals, impacted the quality of immature date cultivars.
  • Results showed that a 30-second hot water treatment improved the color, ripening index, and nutritional composition (like sugars, fiber, and antioxidants) of dates, with the Khadrawi and Jihadi varieties being particularly well-received in taste tests.

The study aimed to explore suitable substrates comprising locally available hardwood sawdusts for the cultivation of Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) in Lebanon. Sawdusts of oak (OS), maple (MAP), and eucalyptus (EUC) were used alone or in combination, supplemented equally by wheat bran (WB). Results showed that complete mycelia run, fruiting, and harvest dates were the minimum in OS-WB: 800-200 by 72.

Maternal diesel particle exposure alters gut microbiota and induces lung injury in rat offspring.

Ecotoxicol Environ Saf

Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, School of Medicine, College of Medicine, Taipei, Taiwan.

Article Synopsis
  • - Maternal exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEP) during pregnancy adversely affects fetal lung development and gut microbiota in both mothers and their offspring.
  • - Rats exposed to DEP showed increased lung injury, higher levels of inflammatory cytokines, and altered gut microbiota composition compared to unexposed controls.
  • - The lung damage in offspring is potentially associated with changes in gut microbiota and disrupted metabolic pathways resulting from the mother's DEP exposure.

Exploration of Strawberry Fruit Quality During Harvest Season Under a Semi-Forcing Culture with Plants Nursed Without Chilling.

Plants (Basel)

October 2024

Instituto Nacional de Investigación Agropecuaria INIA, Camino al Terrible s/n, Salto 50000, Uruguay.

Strawberry, a profitable crop, adapts well to diverse environments. This study evaluated the stability of fruit quality in different strawberry varieties produced as green plants without chilling during the harvest season in northern Uruguay. The focus was on understanding the impact of harvest date versus agricultural practices (different orchards and growers) on key fruit quality variables such as color, firmness, sugars, and acidity.
