Leptospirosis is a re-emerging infectious disease that presents a diagnostic enigma for clinicians with frequent misdiagnosis due to lack of rapid and accurate diagnostic tests, as the current methods are encumbered by inherent limitations. The development of a diagnostic sensor with a sample-in-result-out capability is pivotal for prompt diagnosis. Herein, we developed a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (spin-μPAD) featuring a sample-in-result-out fashion for the detection of specific urinary biomarker, sph2 sphingomyelinase, crucial for noninvasive point-of-care testing. Fabrication of paper devices involved precise photolithography techniques, ensuring a high degree of reproducibility and replicability. By optimizing the device's configuration and protein components, a remarkable sensitivity and specificity was achieved for detecting leptospiral sph2 in urine, even at low concentrations down to 1.5 fg/mL, with an assay time of 15 min. Further, the spin-μPAD was validated with 20 clinical samples, suspected of leptospirosis including other febrile illnesses, and compared with gold standard microscopic agglutination test, culture, Lepto IgM ELISA, darkfield microscopy, and Leptocheck WB spot test. In contrast to commercial diagnostic tools, the spin-μPAD was noninvasive, rapid, easy to use, specific, sensitive, and cost-effective. The results highlight the potential of this innovative spin-μPAD for an efficient and dependable approach to noninvasive leptospirosis diagnosis, addressing critical needs in the realms of public health and clinical settings.

Objective And Rationale: Small studies have shown that the QT interval follows a circadian rhythm. This finding has never been confirmed in a large real-world hospital population and the clinical meaning of disrupted rhythmicity remains unknown.
Methods: In this cohort study, all consecutive adult patients with at least one 12-lead ECG acquired between 1991 and 2021 were considered.

Purpose: To validate the performance of the Notal OCT Analyzer (NOA) in processing self-administered OCT images from an OCT system designed for home use (home OCT [HOCT]) as part of a pivotal study aimed at achieving de novo United States Food and Drug Admininstration marketing authorization.
Design: A prospective quantitative cross-sectional artificial intelligence study.
Participants: The study enrolled adults aged ≥55 years diagnosed with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) in ≥1 eligible eye with a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/320 or better.
The Clinical Laboratory (CL) is involved in the prevention, diagnosis and follow-up of disease, as well as in the monitoring of treatment. For this reason, the CL must have robust quality systems in place in order to provide reliable results that help to ensure correct health care. Since the entry into force of the European regulation (IVDR) on in vitro diagnostic medical devices (EU) 2017/746 has generated the loss of CE marking in some laboratory determinations.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFSmart luminescent materials have drawn a significant attention owing to their unique optical properties and versatility in sensor applications. These materials, encompassing a broad spectrum of organic, inorganic, and hybrid systems including quantum dots, organic dyes, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), offer tunable emission characteristics that can be engineered at the molecular or nanoscale level to respond to specific stimuli, such as temperature, pH, and chemical presence. Recent advancements have been driven by the integration of nanotechnology, which enhances the sensitivity and selectivity of luminescent materials in sensor platforms.

Overheating remains a major barrier to chip miniaturization, leading to device malfunction. Addressing the urgent need for thermal management promotes the development of solid-state electrocaloric cooling. However, enhancing passive heat dissipation through two-dimensional materials in electrocaloric polymers typically compromises the electrocaloric effect.
