The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of dry turmeric rhizomes on biogas production and diet fermentability. Turmeric rhizomes were included at gradually increased levels: 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2% of a diet containing per kg dr matter (DM): 500 g concentrate feed mixture, 400 g berseem hay and 100 g rice straw, and incubated for 48 h. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed that -turmerone, -turmerone and -turmerone were the major bioactive compounds in the rhizomes. Turmeric rhizomes increased ( < 0.01) asymptotic gas production (GP) and rate and lag of CH production and decreased ( < 0.01) rate of GP, lag of GP, asymptotic CH production and proportion of CH production. Turmeric rhizome administration linearly increased ( < 0.01) DM and fiber degradability and concentrations of total short-chain fatty acids, acetic and propionic acids and ammonia-N and quadratically ( < 0.05) decreased fermentation pH. It is concluded that including up to 2% turmeric rhizomes improved ruminal fermentation and decreased CH production.

The broader soil bacterial community responses at ecotoxicologically relevant levels of nano ZnO (nZnO) focussing on co-selection of antibiotic resistance (AR) were investigated. nZnO imposed a stronger influence than the bulk counterpart (bZnO) on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) with multidrug resistance (MDR) systems being predominant (63 % of total ARGs). Proliferation of biomarker ARGs especially for last resort antibiotic like vancomycin was observed and Streptomyces hosted multiple ARGs.

Curcumin is the main ingredient of the Chinese herbal turmeric rhizome, used to treat tumors, diabetes, inflammation, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, and liver diseases. The antitumor effects of curcumin have received even more attention. One of the main mechanisms of antitumor effects includes inhibition of tumor invasion and migration, induction of tumor cell apoptosis, and inhibition of various cell signaling pathways.

Fourteen undescribed sesquiterpenes, named curcumaones A-N (1-14), as well as forty-four (15-58) known ones, were isolated from the secondary rhizomes of Curcuma wenyujin. The structures and absolute configurations of 1-14 were elucidated based on NMR spectroscopic analyses, high resolution electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy (HRESIMS) data and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectral analysis. Among these, five sesquiterpenes with the peroxide linkage (1-5) were obtained and the change of chemical shift between the α-C connecting the peroxide linkage and the oxygen atom has been discussed.
