Betaine-30 (B30) was reported by Karl Dimroth and Christian Reichardt et al. in 1963 as a solvatochromic probe that can be easily synthesized, shows good solubility, and remains stable in various organic solvents and solutions. Its strongly negatively solvatochromic behavior arises from differential solvation between its electronic ground and excited states, making it a valuable tool for assessing solvent polarity using the (30) polarity scale, also devised by Dimroth and Reichardt. In addition, advancements in femtosecond laser spectroscopy in the 1990s greatly improved the understanding of B30's relaxation dynamics following photoexcitation. In solvents capable of hydrogen bonding, such as alcohols, intermolecular hydrogen-bond rearrangement contributes to the multiple relaxation components observed. Since the 1990s, the applications of B30 have expanded beyond simple organic solvents to include complex solvent mixtures, such as electrolyte solutions for battery technologies and eutectic solvent mixtures. Given the growing importance of these complex solvent mixtures, B30 is becoming an increasingly valuable tool for studying previously unexplored solvation properties.

Desalination of seawater by forward osmosis is a technology potentially able to address the global water scarcity problem. The major challenge limiting its widespread practical application is the design of a draw solute that can be separated from water by an energetically efficient process and then reused for the next cycle. Recent experiments demonstrate that a promising draw solute for forward-osmosis desalination is tetrabutylphosphonium 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate ([P][TMBS]).

Departamento de Química, Área de Química Analítica, Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad de La Laguna (ULL), Avenida Astrofísico Francisco Sánchez s/n, 38206 San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain.

In this work, two novel (-)-menthol-based hydrophobic natural eutectic solvents with vanillin and cinnamic acid were prepared and applied as extraction solvents. In this regard, 12 endocrine disruptors, including phenol, 2,4-dimethylphenol, 2,3,6-trimethylphenol, 4--butylphenol, 4--butylphenol, 4--amylphenol, 4--hexylphenol, 4--octylphenol, 4--heptylphenol, 4--octylphenol, and 4--nonylphenol and bisphenol A, were studied in a green tea drink. A temperature-controlled liquid-liquid microextraction was used as the extraction method, and nano-liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection was used as the separation and determination system.

Green chemistry focuses on reducing the environmental impacts of chemicals through sustainable practices. Traditional methods for extracting bioactive compounds from leaves, such as hydro-distillation and organic solvent extraction, have limitations, including long extraction times, high energy consumption, and potential toxic solvent residues. This study explored the use of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), and gas-expanded liquid (GXL) processes to improve efficiency and selectivity.

Nonideality in a binary solvent mixture is manifested through anomalies in various physical properties like viscosity, dielectric constant, polarity, freezing point, boiling point, and so forth. Sometimes, such anomalies become much more prominent, leading to a synergistic behavior, where the physical property of the mixture is way different from its bulk counterparts. Various alcohols/chlorinated methane binary solvent mixtures show such a synergistic behavior.

Herein, we report the influence of solvent on the self-assembly of a dinuclear helicate, (NMe)[Eu(LR)]. A multiple species mixture with the chemical composition of [Eu(LR)] present in CHCN can be transformed into a helicate upon increasing the content of CHCl, accompanied by a significant enhancement in circularly polarized luminescence activity.
