A simplified and stepwise synthetic method for producing sterically congested unsymmetrical 1,2-dicarbonyl radicals was successfully demonstrated including detailed characterization of each radical cation. Using this approach, an aryl- and N-heterocyclic carbene-substituted 1,2-dicarbonyl radical in its neutral form is generated, revealing the stabilizing role of N-heterocyclic carbenes.

Hexaanionic cyclophosphazenate ligands [(RN)PN] provide versatile platforms for the assembly of multinuclear metal arrays due to their multiple coordination sites and highly flexible ligand core structure. This work investigates the impact of incrementally increasing the steric demand of the ligand periphery on the coordination behavior of ethylzinc arrays. It shows that the increased congestion around the ligand sites is alleviated by progressive condensation with the elimination of diethylzinc.

Even though α-arylation of ketones is attractive for direct C-H functionalization of organic substrates, the method largely relies on phosphine-ligated palladium complexes. Only recently, efforts have focused on developing nitrogen-based ligands as a more sustainable alternative to phosphines, with pyridine-functionalized pyridinium amidate (pyr-PYA) ,'-bidentate ligands displaying good selectivity and activity. Here, we report on a second generation set of catalyst precursors that feature a 5-membered N-heterocycle instead of a pyridine as chelating unit of the PYA ligand to provide less steric congestion for the rate-limiting transmetalation of the enolate.

Farnesyl pyrophosphate derivatives bearing an additional oxygen atom at position 5 proved to be very suitable for expanding the substrate promiscuity of sesquiterpene synthases (STSs) and the formation of new oxygenated terpenoids. Insertion of an oxygen atom in position 9, however, caused larger restraints that led to restricted acceptance by STSs. In order to reduce some of the proposed restrictions, two FPP-ether derivatives with altered substitution pattern around the terminal olefinic double bond were designed.

A dual photoredox/cobalt-catalyzed protocol for chemo-, regio-, diastereo- and enantioselective reductive coupling of 1,1-disubstituted allenes and cyclobutenes through chemo-, regio-, diastereo- and enantioselective oxidative cyclization followed by stereoselective protonation promoted by a chiral phosphine-cobalt complex is presented. Such process represents an unprecedented reaction pathway for cobalt catalysis that enables selective transformation of the less sterically congested alkenes of 1,1-disubstituted allenes with cyclobutenes, incorporating a broad scope of tetrasubstituted alkenes into the cyclobutane scaffolds in up to 86 % yield, >98 : 2 chemo- and regioselectivity, >98 : 2 dr and >99.5:0.

Developing methodologies for the expedient construction of biologically important δ-valerolactones bearing a privileged azaarene moiety and a sterically congested all-carbon quaternary stereocenter is important and full of challenges. We present herein a novel multicatalytic strategy for the stereodivergent synthesis of highly functionalized chiral δ-valerolactones bearing 1,4-nonadjacent quaternary/tertiary stereocenters by orthogonally merging borrowing hydrogen and Michael addition between α-azaaryl acetates and allylic alcohols followed by lactonization in a one-pot manner. Enabled by Cu/Ru relay catalysis, this cascade protocol offers the advantages of atom/step economy, redox-neutrality, mild reaction conditions, and broad substrate tolerance.
