Left atrial (LA) strain imaging, which measures the deformation of the LA using speckle-tracing echocardiography (STE), has emerged recently as an exciting tool to help provide diagnostic and prognostic information for patients with a broad range of cardiovascular (CV) pathologies. Perhaps due to the LA's relatively thin-walled architecture compared with the more muscular structure of the left ventricle (LV), functional changes in the left atrium often precede changes in the LV, making LA strain (LAS) an earlier marker for underlying pathology than many conventional echocardiographic parameters. LAS imaging is typically divided into three phases according to the stage of the cardiac cycle: reservoir strain, which is characterized by LA filling during systole; conduit strain, which describes LA deformation during passive LV filling; and booster strain, which provides information on the LA atrium during LA systole in late ventricular diastole.

Thyroid hormone action in adult neurogliogenic niches: the known and unknown.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

Over the last decades, thyroid hormones (THs) signaling has been established as a key signaling cue for the proper maintenance of brain functions in adult mammals, including humans. One of the most fascinating roles of THs in the mature mammalian brain is their ability to regulate adult neurogliogenic processes. In this respect, THs control the generation of new neuronal and glial progenitors from neural stem cells (NSCs) as well as their final differentiation and maturation programs.

Obstructive cardiac myxosarcoma of the right ventricular outflow tract with pulmonary embolism and concurrent right atrial hemangiosarcoma in a dog.

Can Vet J

March 2024

Department of Veterinary Pathology, Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, 52 Campus Drive, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan S7N 5B4.

A 13-year-old spayed female rottweiler crossbreed dog was presented with an 8-day history of abnormal gait and collapse associated with excitement or physical activity. A cardiac gallop was noticed on thoracic auscultation, and a 1st-degree atrioventricular block and sinus tachycardia were noted on an electrocardiogram. Echocardiography identified a hypoechoic, irregularly marginated luminal mass in the right ventricle at the level of the pulmonic valves.

Article Synopsis
  • - The research examined how MDMA affects gap junction proteins, specifically connexin 43, in heart cells, aiming to uncover the toxic effects of MDMA on heart function.
  • - Using neonatal rats, scientists created an in vitro model to analyze the impact of MDMA exposure on connexin 43 levels, its distribution, phosphorylation status, and intracellular calcium dynamics in cardiac cells.
  • - Findings indicated that MDMA significantly reduces connexin 43 levels and alters its distribution and phosphorylation, leading to disrupted calcium balance in heart cells, contributing to MDMA’s harmful effects on the heart.
