The current study aims to investigate the association between endothelial function and lower extremity perfusion in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). : In total 229 patients with PAD (Rutherford stage 0-3) were enrolled in the current study. Endothelial function was assessed by measuring flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and endothelial cell proliferation capacity (ECPC). Lower extremity perfusion was assessed by measuring oscillometry-based ankle brachial index (oABI) and pulse wave index (PWI). In addition, carotid intima-media-thickness (cIMT) was also measured as a surrogate marker for atherosclerosis. Correlations between FMD, ECPC, oABI, PWI, and cIMT were analysed using Pearson correlation coefficient. The relationship between the above variables and the severity of PAD was investigated using ordinal logistic regression analysis. : Correlation analysis showed that FMD negatively associated with PWI (r = -0.183, = 0.005), ECPC positively associated with oABI (r = 0.162, = 0.014), and oABI negatively associated with PWI (r = -0.264, < 0.001). Ordinal logistic regression analysis showed that ECPC ( = -0.009, 0.048), oABI ( = -5.290, < 0.001), and age ( = -0.058, = 0.002) negatively associated with the PAD Rutherford stages. In addition, PWI ( = 0.006, p < 0.001), cIMT ( = 18.363, 0.043) positively associated with the PAD Rutherford stages. : Endothelial function significantly associates with lower extremity perfusion in patients with PAD, and both are related to the severity of PAD.

Historically, the paradigm for all maladies was associated with an imbalance of the 4 humors: blood, black bile, yellow bile, and phlegm. Although our understanding of disease has evolved significantly since the time of Hippocrates, a similar cornerstone of inpatient and ambulatory care involves understanding and correcting imbalances of volume. The kidneys are the principal organs controlling extracellular volume, capable of both sensing and altering salt retention through multiple redundant pathways, including the sympathetic nervous system and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.

The vegetal alkaloid toxin veratridine (VTD) is a selective voltage-gated Na (Na) channel activator, widely used as a pharmacological tool in vascular physiology. We have previously shown that Na channels, expressed in arteries, contribute to vascular tone in mouse mesenteric arteries (MAs). Here, we aimed to better characterize the mechanisms of action of VTD using mouse cecocolic arteries (CAs), a model of resistance artery.

Purpose: This review explores the role of pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) in retinal degenerative and vascular disorders and assesses its potential both as an adjunct to established vascular endothelial growth factor inhibiting treatments for retinal vascular diseases and as a neuroprotective therapeutic agent.

Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted, focusing on the neuroprotective and anti-angiogenic properties of PEDF. The review evaluated its effects on retinal health, its dysregulation in ocular disorders, and its therapeutic application in preclinical models.

Hypertension is one of the leading causes of premature death worldwide. Despite advances in conventional treatments, there remains a significant need for more effective and natural alternatives to control hypertension. In this context, sprouted barley extracts have emerged as a potential therapeutic option.

Maintaining the physiological function of the vascular endothelium and endothelial glycocalyx is crucial for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, which is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Damage to these structures can lead to atherosclerosis, hypertension, and other cardiovascular problems, especially in individuals with risk factors such as diabetes and obesity. Endothelial dysfunction is associated with ischemic disease and has a negative impact on overall cardiovascular health.
