A new and threatened polypore species, , is described from the cloud forests of southern Brazil. It is characterized by single-pileate basidiomata that grow on dead branches and along living stems of standing trunks and present a context with dark lines and resinous tubes. When growing in axenic culture, this species also develops chlamydospores. We provide an illustrated morphological description and molecular analysis. Our specimens from Brazil form a monophyletic group among other species of the Southern Hemisphere. The conservation status of is assessed and published as "Critically Endangered" based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature  (IUCN) criteria. Additionally, a key to the species is provided.

Unlabelled: Nitrogen (N) fixation in association with mosses could be a key source of new N in tropical montane cloud forests since these forests maintain high humidity levels and stable temperatures, both of which are important to N fixation. Here, nutrient availability could be a prominent control of N fixation processes. However, the mechanisms and extent of these controls, particularly in forests at different successional stages, remains unknown to date.

Land Surface Temperature (LST) is widely recognized as a sensitive indicator of climate change, and it plays a significant role in ecological research. The ERA5-Land LST dataset, developed and managed by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), is extensively used for global or regional LST studies. However, its fine-scale application is limited by its low spatial resolution.

Regulation of Electron Cloud Density by Electronic Effects of Substituents to Optimize Photocatalytic H Evolution of Carbon Dots.

December 2024

School of Mechanical, Medical and Process Engineering, Centre for Agriculture and the Bioeconomy, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Queensland, 4000, Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • Carbon dots (CDs) have potential for photocatalytic water splitting but face challenges in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to slow carrier transfer efficiency.
  • This study investigates how different substituents affect the electron cloud density of glucose-based CDs, focusing on CDs modified with electron-drawing (─SOH) and electron-donating (─OH) groups.
  • Results show that CDs-SOH significantly outperform other variants in hydrogen production, highlighting the role of electron cloud density in enhancing photocatalytic activity.

An explainable and supervised machine learning model for prediction of red blood cell transfusion in patients during hip fracture surgery.

BMC Anesthesiol

December 2024

Department of Anesthesiology, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, Guangzhou, 510030, Guangdong, China.

Aim: The study aimed to develop a predictive model with machine learning (ML) algorithm, to predict and manage the need for red blood cell (RBC) transfusion during hip fracture surgery.

Methods: Data of 2785 cases that underwent hip fracture surgery from April 2016 to May 2022 were collected, covering demographics, medical history and comorbidities, type of surgery and preoperative laboratory results. The primary outcome was the intraoperative RBC transfusion.

Conservation Science Wildlife Health, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, Escondido, California, United States of America.

Andean bears (Tremarctos ornatus) forage extensively on bromeliads (Puya spp.) across their range, although their selectivity for bromeliads is less understood. We report on foraging activity by Andean bears on two species of bromeliad, Puya leptostachya and Puya membranacea, in high elevation puna grasslands (3499-3806 m.
