The Strait of Sicily (SoS) is a region of key ecological importance because of its peculiar oceanographic conditions, high biodiversity, and critical role as a transition area between the western and eastern basins of the Mediterranean Sea. The SoS was designated as an Ecologically or Biologically Significant Area (EBSA) by the Contracting Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2014 [1] and acknowledged as an Important Shark and Ray Area (ISRA) in 2023 [2]. Ongoing research and conservation efforts are essential to protect this vital marine corridor from increasing anthropogenic pressures.

Research on advanced biopreservation - technologies that include, for example, partial freezing, supercooling, and vitrification with nanoparticle infusion and laser rewarming - is proceeding at a rapid pace, potentially affecting many areas of medicine and the life sciences, food, agriculture, and environmental conservation. Given the breadth and depth of its medical, scientific, and corresponding social impacts, advanced biopreservation is poised to emerge as a disruptive technology with real benefits, but also ethical challenges and risks. Early engagement with potentially affected groups can help navigate possible societal barriers to adoption of this new technology and help ensure that emerging capabilities align with the needs, desires, and expectations of a broad range of interested parties.

In recent years, many strategies for sustainable food systems have been launched at the national and global levels, which require better tools to monitor their progress. Subsequently, discussions on their measurements have drawn enormous attention, and various indicators have been developed. As indicators at the national level reflect policy priorities in the respective countries, it is difficult to develop adequate global indicators that accommodate different national priorities.
