We present an efficient implementation of multireference algebraic diagrammatic construction theory (MR-ADC) for simulating core-ionized states and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). Taking advantage of spin adaptation, automatic code generation, and density fitting, our implementation can perform calculations for molecules with more than 1500 molecular orbitals, incorporating static and dynamic correlation in the ground and excited electronic states. We demonstrate the capabilities of MR-ADC methods by simulating the XPS spectra of substituted ferrocene complexes and azobenzene isomers. For the ground electronic states of these molecules, the XPS spectra computed using the extended second-order MR-ADC method (MR-ADC(2)-X) are in a very good agreement with available experimental results. We further show that MR-ADC can be used as a tool for interpreting or predicting the results of time-resolved XPS measurements by simulating the core ionization spectra of azobenzene along its photoisomerization, including the XPS signatures of excited states and the minimum energy conical intersection. This work is the first in a series of publications reporting the efficient implementations of MR-ADC methods.

Article Synopsis
  • Heavy atom compounds are difficult to analyze in computational chemistry due to the need to manage relativistic and correlation effects simultaneously, as they often exhibit strong correlation, complicating methods like perturbation theory and single-reference coupled cluster (CC) methods.
  • To address this, researchers proposed a DMRG-tailored CC method that corrects CC results using density matrix renormalization group wave functions, enabling more accurate calculations for these complex systems.
  • This paper presents a comprehensive implementation of this method, applicable to polyatomic molecules with heavy atoms and strong multireference characteristics, demonstrated through the study of the chiral uranium compound NUHFI and comparisons with the NUF molecule for vibrational frequency analysis.

The Localized Active Space Method with Unitary Selective Coupled Cluster.

We introduce a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm, the localized active space unitary selective coupled cluster singles and doubles (LAS-USCCSD) method. Derived from the localized active space unitary coupled cluster (LAS-UCCSD) method, LAS-USCCSD first performs a classical LASSCF calculation, then selectively identifies the most important parameters (cluster amplitudes used to build the multireference UCC ansatz) for restoring interfragment interaction energy using this reduced set of parameters with the variational quantum eigensolver method. We benchmark LAS-USCCSD against LAS-UCCSD by calculating the total energies of (H), (H), and -butadiene, and the magnetic coupling constant for a bimetallic compound [Cr(OH)(NH)].

Rapidly convergent quantum Monte Carlo using a Chebyshev projector.

Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK.

The multireference coupled-cluster Monte Carlo (MR-CCMC) algorithm is a determinant-based quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) algorithm that is conceptually similar to Full Configuration Interaction QMC (FCIQMC). It has been shown to offer a balanced treatment of both static and dynamic correlation while retaining polynomial scaling, although application to large systems with significant strong correlation remained impractical. In this paper, we document recent algorithmic advances that enable rapid convergence and a more black-box approach to the multireference problem.
