Objective: Patients with chronic kidney disease suffer from immune dysfunction, increasing susceptibility to infections. The aim of the study was to investigate air contamination with respiratory viruses in a dialysis unit at a quaternary hospital using molecular detection techniques and to analyze airflow dynamics through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for a comprehensive assessment of air transmission risks.

Methods: We conducted dialysis unit air sampling using AerosolSense™ samplers.

Introduction: In chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) is linked to cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Levels of PTH are influenced by serum phosphate (P) and calcium (Ca), but little is known about the impact of magnesium (Mg) on PTH. Hence, this study investigated the relationship between PTH and Mg in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and non-dialysis patients from three hospitals in China.

Background: Prior studies have demonstrated a lower prevalence of postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) in Black, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American patients compared with White cohorts after coronary artery bypass grafting. We hypothesized that preoperative differences in left atrial size may explain this disparity.

Methods: We assessed the incidence of new POAF in 1218 patients (215 minority patients and 1003 White patients) undergoing isolated, first-time coronary artery bypass grafting from January 2017 through September 2022.

Background: Contemporary population-based data examining the rates of cardiac surgery and the relationship between non-dialysis-requiring chronic kidney disease (CKD) and postoperative outcomes in cardiac surgery are limited.

Methods: We identified hospital admissions for cardiac surgical procedures in adults from 2010-2019 in the United States. The primary exposure was kidney disease, categorized as CKD stage G3, CKD stages G4 or G5, and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD).

Staged Hybrid Coronary Revascularization in Acute Coronary Syndrome.

Ann Thorac Surg Short Rep

June 2023

Department of Cardiac Surgery, Heart Center, Grande Ospedale Metropolitano "Bianchi-Melacrino-Morelli," Reggio Calabria, Italy.

Background: In acute coronary syndrome (ACS) with non-ST elevation myocardial infarction, there is a subgroup of patients who are difficult to treat; these are patients with a complex left anterior descending artery (LAD) lesion or a non-LAD culprit lesion but who are not suitable for standard coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Staged hybrid coronary revascularization (HCR), combining primary percutaneous coronary intervention on the non-LAD culprit lesion with CABG, represents an attractive solution.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study to compare effectiveness and safety of HCR vs CABG alone.
