Published: August 2024

Achieving effective community reintegration is important to maximize recovery in patients with traumatic brain injury, simultaneously limiting caregiver burden and improving satisfaction with quality of life. Certain medical complications that are common after brain injury may impact community reintegration, and should be addressed by the physician in a systematic approach. Additionally certain social and environmental factors such as mobility or return to work or school may arise, and should be addressed proactively by the physician. Inpatient/residential or outpatient programs with case management and a multi-disciplinary team can facilitate community reentry for patients, and should be considered when available.

From Waste to Innovation: A Circular Economy Approach for Tissue Engineering by Transforming Human Bone Waste into Novel Collagen Membranes.

Biomolecules

January 2025

Department of Surgery and Specialties, Central University Hospital of Asturias, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Oviedo, 33011 Oviedo, Spain.

The aim of the circular economy is to treat waste as a valuable raw material, reintegrating it into the industrial economy and extending the lifecycle of subsequent products. Efforts to reduce the production of hard-to-recycle waste are becoming increasingly important to manufacturers, not only of consumer goods but also of specialized items that are difficult to manufacture, such as medical supplies, which have now become a priority for the European Union. The purpose of the study is to manufacture a novel human-purified type I collagen membrane from bone remnants typically discarded during the processing of cortico-cancellous bones in tissue banks and to evaluate its mechanical properties and effectiveness in regenerating bone-critical mandibular defects in rabbits.

Co-designing a film showcasing the dental experiences of community returners (ex-offenders).

Front Oral Health

January 2025

Centre for Dental Public Health and Primary Care, Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, London, England.

Background: The oral health of over 90,000 individuals in UK prisons is four times worse than the general population. A recent scoping review on the oral health of prisoners inside the justice system highlighted the lack of research about what happens when they transition out of prison to become community returners.

Objectives: To co-design a film to showcase the dental experiences of community returners before and after they transition out of prison, change perceptions and inform oral health research priorities.

Rehabilitation Studies, Faculty of Medicine and Health, The University of Sydney, The Kolling Institute, Northern Sydney Local Health District, St Leonards, NSW, Australia.

Study Design: Narrative review OBJECTIVES: Sir Ludwig Guttmann realised spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation should incorporate more than a biomedical approach if SCI patients were to adjust to their injury and achieve productive social re-integration. He introduced components into rehabilitation he believed would assist his patients build physical strength as well as psychological resilience that would help them re-engage with their communities. We pay tribute to Sir Ludwig by presenting research that has focussed on psychosocial factors that contribute to adjustment dynamics after SCI.

Background: In low-income rural Rwanda, adolescent pregnancy limits health and education, leading to poor health outcomes, high dropout rates, and restricted socioeconomic mobility. While previous studies have inspected the prevalence, stigma, and health-related aspects of adolescent pregnancy in Rwanda, research is needed to investigate the impact of parental support and reproductive health education in these communities.

Objectives: This research investigates the connection between adolescent pregnancy, socioeconomic status, and parental engagement in reproductive health education in rural Rwanda.
