Background: Atherosclerotic disease is an important cause of morbidity among adults with congenital heart disease (CHD). Prevalence of dyslipidemia in this group is poorly described.

Objectives: This study aimed to describe the prevalence of dyslipidemia among adults with CHD.

Methods: A prospective, outpatient screening study was conducted among adults aged ≥18 years at 4 New England ambulatory congenital cardiology centers. Participants were surveyed regarding cardiovascular risk factors. Nonfasting fingerstick samples were obtained for analysis using a point-of-care lipid analyzer.

Results: Lipid screening was completed on 186 participants (median age 30 [range 18-71] years, 50% female). Eighteen (10%) had simple CHD anatomy, and 63 (34%) had complex anatomy. Only 15% of 169 respondents reported history of high cholesterol. Eighty-five (46%) participants met National Cholesterol Education Program definition of dyslipidemia with 60 (32%), 62 (34%), and 37 (20%) having low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C <40 mg/dL), high non-HDL-C (≥130 mg/dL), and high total cholesterol (TC ≥200 mg/dL), respectively. TC was higher among participants with simple CHD than among those with moderate and complex lesions (mean 178.4 ± 48.7 vs 170.1 ± 35.0 vs 157.6 ± 34.5 mg/dL;  = 0.03). HDL-C was lower among participants with complex CHD than among those with simple and moderate lesions (mean 44.1 ± 13.5 vs 46.9 ± 12.5 vs 49.8 ± 15.3 mg/dL;  = 0.05).

Conclusions: Dyslipidemia is highly prevalent among our cohort of adults with CHD, despite <15% reporting a prior diagnosis. Low HDL-C was more common in complex CHD, and high TC was more common in simple or moderate CHD. Lipid screening should be part of preventive health maintenance for all adults with CHD.

Aim: To investigate the effect of weight loss and metabolic improvement after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in older adults aged 65 years or over compared with younger adults in a retrospective analysis.

Methods: The J-SMART study database of 322 Japanese individuals with body mass index (BMI) ≥32 kg/m who underwent LSG between 2011 and 2014 at 10 centers accredited by the Japanese Society for Treatment of Obesity were analyzed. The subjects were classified into two groups: ≥65 age group (range, 65-76 years; n = 25) and <65 age group (range, 22-64 years; n = 297).

Serum lipid profile in systemic lupus erythematosus.

Front Immunol

January 2025

Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University, School of Medicine, Xiamen University, Xiamen, Fujian, China.

Background: Dyslipidemia presents in various autoimmune diseases, and the serum lipid profile in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has not yet been clearly defined. This study aims to evaluate the level of serum lipids in patients with SLE.

Methods: A case-control study evaluated four conventional sera lipids-total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-in patients with SLE compared to healthy controls (HCs).

Background: The appropriate treatment high blood pressure (BP) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol.(LDL-C), according to clinical guidelines, reduces a patient's risk of a cardiovascular event.

Aim: This systematic review aims to evaluate the attainment of BP and LDL-C goals among the Irish population in both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases, the level of adherence to prescribing guidelines by doctors and the level of medication adherence among patients.

Enterococcus faecalis is responsible for numerous serious infections, and treatment options often include ampicillin combined with an aminoglycoside or dual beta-lactam therapy with ampicillin and a third-generation cephalosporin. The mechanism of dual beta-lactam therapy relies on the saturation of penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Ceftobiprole exhibits high affinity binding to nearly all E.

Exploring age and gender disparities in cardiometabolic phenotypes and lipidomic signatures among Chinese adults: a nationwide cohort study.

Life Metab

October 2024

Department of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases, Shanghai Institute of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases, Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai 200025, China.

Understanding sex disparities in modifiable risk factors across the lifespan is essential for crafting individualized intervention strategies. We aim to investigate age-related sex disparity in cardiometabolic phenotypes in a large nationwide Chinese cohort. A total of 254,670 adults aged 40 years or older were selected from a population-based cohort in China.
