Chalcogen bonding interactions (ChBIs) have been widely employed to create ordered noncovalent assemblies in solids and liquids. Yet, their ability to engineer molecular self-assembly on surfaces has not been demonstrated. Here, we report the first demonstration of on-surface molecular recognition solely governed by ChBIs. Scanning tunneling microscopy and calculations reveal that a pyrenyl derivative can undergo noncovalent chiral dimerization on the Au(111) surface through double Ch···N interactions involving Te- or Se-containing chalcogenazolo pyridine motifs. In contrast, reference chalcogenazole counterparts lacking the pyridyl moiety fail to form regular self-assemblies on Au, resulting in disordered assemblies.

Many bacteria swim in liquid or swarm on surface using the flagellum rotated by a motor driven by specific ion flow. The motor consists of the rotor and stator, and the stator converts the energy of ion flow to mechanical rotation. However, the ion pathway and the mechanism of stator rotation coupled with specific ion flow are still obscure.

ConspectusThe design of properties and functions of molecular assemblies requires not only a proper choice of building blocks but also control over their packing arrangements. A highly versatile unit in this context is a particular type of triptycene with substituents at the 1,8,13-positions, called tripodal triptycene, which offers predictable molecular packing and multiple functionalization sites, both at the opposite 4,5,16- or 10 (bridgehead)-positions. These triptycene building blocks are capable of two-dimensional (2D) nested hexagonal packing, leading to the formation of 2D sheets, which undergo one-dimensional (1D) stacking into well-defined "2D+1D" structures.

Hybrid environmentally friendly nanocomposite films were synthesized via electrospinning using polycaprolactone (PCL) and chitosan (CH). The resulting nanofiber films displayed a homogeneous fibrous microstructure with average diameters between 250-270 nm. Molecular simulation experiments revealed a progressive increase in hydrogen bonding over time.
