Biofilm formation is integral to the pathogenesis of numerous adherent bacteria and contributes to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The rising threat of AMR means the need to develop novel nonbactericidal antiadhesion approaches against such bacteria is more urgent than ever. Both adherent-invasive (AIEC, implicated in inflammatory bowel disease) and uropathogenic (UPEC, responsible for ∼80% of urinary tract infections) adhere to terminal mannose sugars on epithelial glycoproteins through the FimH adhesin on their type 1 pilus. Although mannose-based inhibitors have previously been explored to inhibit binding of adherent bacteria to epithelial cells, this approach has been limited by monovalent carbohydrate-protein interactions. Herein, we pioneer a novel approach to this problem through the preparation of colicin E9 bioconjugates that bind to the abundant BtuB receptor in the outer membrane of bacteria, which enables multivalent presentation of functional motifs on the cell surface. We show these bioconjugates label the surface of live and furthermore demonstrate that mannose-presenting "glyco-colicins" induce aggregation, thereby using the bacteria, itself, as a multivalent platform for mannose display, which triggers binding to adjacent FimH-presenting bacteria.

Implants aim to restore skeletal dysfunction associated with ageing and trauma, yet infection and ineffective immune responses can lead to failure. This project characterized the microbiological and host cell responses to titanium alloy with or without electroplated metallic copper. Bacterial viability counting and scanning electron microscopy quantified and visualized the direct and indirect bactericidal effects of the Cu-electroplated titanium (Cu-Ep-Ti) against two different Staphylococcus aureus strains.

The protease, a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin type 1 motif member 13 (ADAMTS13), known to cleave only the von Willebrand factor (VWF), has powerful regulatory effects on microvascular platelet adhesion, thrombosis, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction. We study the protection against diabetes-induced retinal injury in experimental rats by supplementation with recombinant ADAMTS13. We compare human epiretinal membranes and vitreous samples from nondiabetic subjects and patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and extend in vitro analyses with the use of various immunodetection and spectrofluorimetric methods on rat retina and human retinal glial and endothelial cell cultures.

Background: Dermatophytes, the primary causative agents of superficial cutaneous fungal infections in humans, present a significant therapeutic challenge owing to the increasing prevalence of recurrent infections and the emergence of antifungal resistance. To address this critical gap, this study was designed to investigate the antifungal potential of 3-benzylideneindolin-2-one against dermatophytes and assess its in vivo toxicological profile using brine shrimp and zebrafish embryo models.
Methods: The antifungal activity of 3-benzylideneindolin-2-one was evaluated against 30 clinical isolates of dermatophyte species, including Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton rubrum, Microsporum gypseum, Microsporum canis, and Epidermophyton floccosum, by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) using the broth microdilution method.

Methods: Children with ARTIs admitted to the Children's Hospital of Soochow University (SCH) from January 2010 to December 2023 and underwent MP nucleic acid PCR assay were included. Clinical data on age, sex, onset time and detection result were collected and analyzed.
