Spain suffered a Civil War between 1936 and 1939 that ended with the victory of the National Forces led by General Franco. Once the Spanish Civil War ended, 2238 subjects were executed and buried in several mass graves in the Cemetery of Paterna, one of Spain's largest mass grave sites. Efforts to locate and identify all the victims of the mass graves of the Paterna cemetery are ongoing, but the actual data of the percentage of DNA identifications remains uncertain. Following this, we conducted a meta-research study including 15 mass graves and 933 subjects to determine the DNA identification rates in the mass graves of the Paterna cemetery. We found that the total proportion of identified subjects in the mass graves was 15.9 % (95 % CI: 10.0-22.9). Moreover, we found that the model between the identification success rate (ISR) and the number of relatives that donated DNA (NRTDD) in the mass graves of the cemetery of Paterna was ISR = NRTDD. Results obtained about the proportion of identified subjects and the model between the ISR and the NRTDD imply the need for a scientific reflection between all the research groups involved in the identification tasks to modify deficiencies and update identification protocols to obtain better future results.

Adnexal torsion is a well-recognized gynecologic emergency; however, uterine torsion is less well-known. The majority of uterine torsions occur in gravid uteri; torsion in postmenopausal patients is rare. We report a case of uterine and bilateral adnexal torsion in a postmenopausal woman due to a large leiomyoma.

The elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) as a public health problem remains an ongoing challenge in the Pacific region. This study reports on antigen (Ag) and microfilaria (Mf) prevalence in Samoa in 2019, 7-9 months after the completion of the first round of triple-drug mass drug administration (MDA). It evaluates the effectiveness of the intervention for reducing Ag prevalence to below a 2% threshold, and how this differs between 5-9-year-olds and ≥10-year-olds.

Thyrotropin receptor (TSHR) and insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R) have been shown to crosstalk in primary cultures of human thyrocytes (hThyros) and Graves' orbital fibroblasts. The phenomenon of TSHR/IGF-1R crosstalk has been largely studied in the pathogenesis of thyroid eye disease (TED) in human orbital fibroblasts. Here, we investigated the effects of inhibiting the IGF-1R-mediated contribution to crosstalk by linsitinib (Lins), a small-molecule IGF-1R kinase inhibitor, on TSH-induced regulation of thyroperoxidase (TPO) and thyroglobulin (TG) mRNAs and proteins in hThyros and on TPO and TG mRNAs and free thyroxine (fT4) levels in mice.

One critical issue in hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX MS) analysis is the deleterious back exchange. Herein, we report that when matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) is used, the MALDI process itself can also cause significant back exchange. The back exchange occurred inside the reactive MALDI plume was investigated by depositing a fully deuterated sample prepared in DO on top of a preloaded dried layer of matrix.

Graves' Disease and the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: A Korean Population-Based Study.

Thyroid

December 2024

Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Medicine, Samsung Medical Center, Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine, Seoul, Korea.

Several meta-analyses have found no association between Graves' disease (GD) and an increased risk of incident diabetes; however, the intricate relationship between thyroid dysfunction and diabetes remains underexplored. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the risk of incident type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in a population newly diagnosed with GD, focusing on different treatment methods and treatment duration. This was a retrospective population-based study utilizing data from the Korean National Health Insurance database.
