Introduction: The presence of the section (formerly known as ) in the cork industry involves the risk of respiratory diseases such as suberosis.

Methods: The aim of this study was to corroborate the predominant fungi present in this occupational environment by performing a mycological analysis of 360 workers' nasal exudates collected by nasal swabs. Additionally, evaluation of respiratory disorders among the cork workers was also performed by spirometry.

Results: section was detected by qPCR in 37 out of the 360 nasal swabs collected from workers' samples. From those, 25 remained negative for sp. when using culture-based methods. A significant association was found between ventilatory defects and years of work in the cork industry, with those people working for 10 or more years in this industry having an approximately two-fold increased risk of having ventilatory defects compared to those working less time in this setting. Among the workers who detected the presence of section , those with symptoms presented slightly higher average values of CFU.

Discussion: Overall, the results obtained in this study show that working in the cork industry may have adverse effects on worker's respiratory health. Nevertheless, more studies are needed (e.g., using serological assays) to clarify the impact of each risk factor (fungi and dust) on disease etiology.

Access to safe water and food is a critical issue in sub-Saharan Africa, where microbial contamination poses significant health risks. Conventional water treatment and food preservation methods have limitations in addressing water safety, particularly for antibiotic-resistant bacteria and other pathogenic microorganisms. This review explores the potential application of bacteriophages as an innovative solution for water treatment and food safety in the region.

Electrostatic Spray Drying of a Milk Protein Matrix-Impact on Maillard Reactions.

Molecules

December 2024

Food Chemistry and Technology, Teagasc Food Research Centre, Moorepark, Fermoy, Co., P61 C996 Cork, Ireland.

Electrostatic spray drying (ESD) of a milk protein matrix comprising whey protein isolate (WPI), skim milk powder (SMP), and lactose was compared to conventional spray drying (CSD) and freeze-drying (FD). ESD and CSD were used to produce powders at low (0.12-0.

Aims: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is the most common complication of pregnancy and is known to be associated with an increased risk of postpartum metabolic disease. Based on the important role that the intestinal microbiota plays in blood glucose regulation and insulin sensitivity, supplementation of probiotic and postbiotic strains could improve glucose metabolism and tolerance in GDM.

Main Methods: 56 4-week-old female C57BL/6J-mice were divided into 4 groups (n = 14 animals/group): control (CNT), high-fat/high-sucrose (HFS), pA1c® alive (pA1c®) and heat-inactivated pA1c® (pA1c®HI).

The contributions of academic drug discovery are well characterised in the US context but less well understood elsewhere. This paper provides a UK perspective, focusing on the activities of Drug Discovery Units (DDUs). These units have established themselves as coordinators of translational research, working at the early stages of the drug pipeline to link up the academic and industry capabilities needed to take drug candidates towards the market.

Collaborative intelligence (CI) involves human-machine interactions and is deemed safety-critical because their reliable interactions are crucial in preventing severe injuries and environmental damage. As these applications become increasingly data-driven, the reliability of CI applications depends on the quality of data, shaping the system's ability to interpret and respond in diverse and often unpredictable environments. In this regard, it is important to adhere to data quality standards and guidelines, thus facilitating the advancement of these collaborative systems in industry.
