Isoprene oxidation produces water-soluble organic gases capable of partitioning to aerosol liquid water. The formation of secondary organic aerosols through such aqueous pathways (aqSOA) can take place either reversibly or irreversibly; however, the split between these fractions in the atmosphere is highly uncertain. The aim of this study was to characterize the reversibility of aqSOA formed from isoprene at a location in the eastern United States under substantial influence from both anthropogenic and biogenic emissions. The reversible and irreversible uptake of water-soluble organic gases to aerosol water was characterized in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, using measurements of particulate water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in alternating dry and ambient configurations. WSOC evaporation with drying was observed systematically throughout the late spring and summer, indicating reversible aqSOA formation during these times. We show through time lag analyses that WSOC concentrations, including the WSOC that evaporates with drying, peak 6 to 11h after isoprene concentrations, with maxima at a time lag of 9h. The absolute reversible aqSOA concentrations, as well as the relative amount of reversible aqSOA, increased with decreasing NO /isoprene ratios, suggesting that isoprene epoxydiol (IEPOX) or other low-NO oxidation products may be responsible for these effects. The observed relationships with NO and isoprene suggest that this process occurs widely in the atmosphere, and is likely more important in other locations characterized by higher isoprene and/or lower NO levels. This work underscores the importance of accounting for both reversible and irreversible uptake of isoprene oxidation products to aqueous particles.

Unveiling the Dissociation Mechanism of Diglycine Perchlorate.

Inorg Chem

January 2025

High Pressure & Synchrotron Radiation Physics Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, Trombay 400085, India.

Determining the dissociation mechanism of perchlorate materials remains a top priority to address sustainability, handling, processing, and synthesis issues of new and existing high-energy density materials vital to many industrial processes. We determined the dissociation mechanism of diglycine perchlorate (DGPCl) using vibrational spectroscopy, which unveiled the formation of ammonium perchlorate (AP) and carbon at high temperatures. Our studies establish that DGPCl shows multiple phase transitions upon heating.

Facilitated Self-Adjusting Mechanism with Mn Additive in Electrolyte for Ammonium-Ion Hybrid Supercapacitors.

State Key Laboratory of Silicon and Advanced Semiconductor Materials, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 310058, China.

Ammonium-ion hybrid supercapacitors (AIHSCs) have gained extensive attention due to their high safety and environmental friendliness. Manganese oxides are among the most promising cathode materials; however, the side electrochemical reactions occurring in aqueous electrolytes limit their reversible capacities and energy densities. This work prepares the β-/γ-MnO electrode and reveals the side electrochemical reactions occurring in the (NH)SO electrolyte.

Spatiotemporal Control Over Circadian Rhythms With Light.

Centre for Systems Chemistry, Stratingh Institute for Chemistry, University of Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Circadian rhythms are endogenous biological oscillators that synchronize internal physiological processes and behaviors with external environmental changes, sustaining homeostasis and health. Disruption of circadian rhythms leads to numerous diseases, including cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, cancer, diabetes, and neurological disorders. Despite the potential to restore healthy rhythms in the organism, pharmacological chronotherapy lacks spatial and temporal resolution.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is an irreversible and chronic inflammatory condition with limited therapeutic options and a high mortality rate. We aimed to determine the possible role and mechanisms of wogonin (WGN) on PF. A rat model of PF was established with intratracheally administrated with bleomycin (BLM), followed by intravenously injecting with WGN and weekly body weight measurements for four weeks.

Replacement of a single residue changes the primary specificity of thrombin.

J Thromb Haemost

January 2025

Edward A. Doisy Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Saint Louis University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO 63104 USA. Electronic address:

Background: Thrombin prefers substrates carrying Arg at the site of cleavage (P1) because of the presence of D189 in the primary specificity (S1) pocket but can also cleave substrates carrying Phe at P1. The structural basis of this property is unknown.

Objective: Solve the X-ray structure of thrombin bound to a ligand carrying Phe at P1 and investigate the effects of replacing D189.
