Heparan sulfate proteoglycans are a family of glycoproteins that modulate cell signaling by binding growth factors and changing their bioavailability. Syndecans are a specific family of transmembrane heparan sulfate proteoglycans that regulate cell adhesion, migration, and signaling. In this review, we will summarize emerging evidence for the functions of syndecans in the normal and malignant blood systems and their microenvironments. More specifically, we detail the known functions of syndecans within normal hematopoietic stem cells. Furthermore, we discuss the functions of syndecans in hematological malignancies, including myeloid malignancies, lymphomas, and bleeding disorders. As normal and malignant hematopoietic cells require cues from their microenvironments to function, we also summarize the roles of syndecans in cells of the stromal, endothelial, and osteolineage compartments. Syndecan biology is a rapidly evolving field; a comprehensive understanding of these molecules and their place in the hematopoietic system promises to improve our grasp on disease processes and better predict the efficacies of growth factor-targeting therapies.

Objective: To assess the association of serum glycocalyx shedding components (Heparan sulfate, HS; Hyaluronic acid, HA; Syndecan-1, Sdc-1) with outcomes after CA.

Methods: Patients who were comatose for >24 h after CA in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University from 9/2021 to 04/2023 were enrolled. Serum samples were collected 24 h after CA to measure the concentrations of glycocalyx shedding components.

Prostate cancer (PCa) pathogenesis relies on intercellular communication, which can involve tunnelling nanotubes (TNTs) and extracellular vesicles (EVs). TNTs and EVs have been reported to transfer critical cargo involved in cellular functions and signalling, prompting us to investigate the extent of organelle and protein transfer in PCa cells and the potential involvement of the androgen receptor. Using live cell imaging microscopy, we observed extensive formation of TNTs and EVs operating between PCa, non-malignant, and immune cells.

The protease, a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin type 1 motif member 13 (ADAMTS13), known to cleave only the von Willebrand factor (VWF), has powerful regulatory effects on microvascular platelet adhesion, thrombosis, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction. We study the protection against diabetes-induced retinal injury in experimental rats by supplementation with recombinant ADAMTS13. We compare human epiretinal membranes and vitreous samples from nondiabetic subjects and patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and extend in vitro analyses with the use of various immunodetection and spectrofluorimetric methods on rat retina and human retinal glial and endothelial cell cultures.

Qingdao Key Laboratory of Materials for Tissue Repair and Rehabilitation, Shandong Engineering Research Center for Tissue Rehabilitation Materials and Devices, School of Rehabilitation Sciences and Engineering, University of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Qingdao 266113, China. Electronic address:

Acellular cellulose-based biomaterials hold promising potential for treating bladder injuries. However, the compromised cellular state surrounding the wound impedes the complete reconstruction of the bladder. This necessitates the development of a bio-instructive cellulose-based biomaterial that actively controls cell behavior to facilitate effective bladder regeneration.

Sphingosine-1-Phosphate, a Marker of Endothelial Injury and Disease Severity in Preeclampsia.

Hypertension

January 2025

Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Institute of Clinical Sciences Lund, Lund University, Sweden. (C.E., F.P., L.E., S.R.H.).

Background: Preeclampsia is a hypertensive pregnancy disorder marked by endothelial damage. Healthy endothelium is covered by a protective glycocalyx layer, which, when degraded, releases detectable products into the blood. Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is a cardiovascular biomarker involved in glycocalyx preservation, linked to placentation and preeclampsia development.
