Stony corals, the primary architects of coral reef ecosystems, are largely underrepresented in omics studies despite their importance. The presence of endosymbiotic Symbiodiniaceae algae complicates the extraction of pure coral DNA, posing a challenge for genomic research. Here, we devised a comprehensive methodological framework that incorporates various experimental treatments to achieve 99% purity in coral DNA extraction and a robust bioinformatics pipeline to guarantee the assembly of high-quality, contamination-free coral genomes. Validation of our framework using samples demonstrated its efficacy and superiority in obtaining high-quality pure coral genomes using easily accessible adult colony. This integrated framework serves as a critical foundation for large-scale genome-enabled research on stony corals, providing insight into coral evolution and conservation.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder involving mitochondrial dysfunction and consequent production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), generated after amyloid peptide (Aβ42) accumulation. In this study, we isolated a new antioxidant molecule from the sun coral Tubastraea tagusensis and analysed it in cells exposed to oligomeric amyloid-beta peptide 1-42 (oAβ42). The coral was collected and immersed in methanol for the release of compounds, which were submitted to antioxidant DPPH and FRAP activity-guided fractionation using solid-phase extraction and HPLC.

Non-spatial models of competition between floating aquatic vegetation (FAV) and submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) predict a stable state of pure SAV at low total available limiting nutrient level, , a stable state of only FAV for high , and alternative stable states for intermediate , as described by an S-shaped bifurcation curve. Spatial models that include physical heterogeneity of the waterbody show that the sharp transitions between these states become smooth. We examined the effects of heterogeneous initial conditions of the vegetation types.

Reducing energy consumption in the building sector has driven the search for more sustainable construction methods. This study explores the potential of cork-modified mortars reinforced with basalt fabric, focusing on optimizing both mechanical and hygroscopic properties. Six mortar mixtures were produced using a breathable structural mortar made from pure natural hydraulic lime, incorporating varying percentages (0-3%) of cork granules () as lightweight aggregates.

Sea anemones are a rich source of peptide toxins spanning a diverse range of biological activities, typically targeting proteins such as ion channels, receptors and transporters. These peptide toxins and their analogues are usually highly stable and selective for their molecular targets, rendering them of interest as molecular tools, insecticides and therapeutics. Recent transcriptomic and proteomic analyses of the sea anemone Aulactinia veratra identified a novel 28-residue peptide, designated Avt1.

The environmental contamination by plastics, microplastics, and related compounds is a major concern. While the detection and release of micro- and nanoparticles from these materials have been widely studied, the formation and release of molecules resulting from their degradation in the environment have been overlooked. This work presents a study of the products released from poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) irradiated as pure particles and adsorbed on silica and sand surfaces under different irradiation conditions.
