Molecules with both aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) properties are potential organic light-emitting diode materials; however, the AIE and TADF mechanisms are still debatable. In this work, four molecules incorporating carbazole (), phenoxazine (), and phenothiazine () as donor groups to the diphenylsulfone acceptor were investigated. The experiment results indicate that a molecule containing exhibits solely TADF properties, whereas molecules containing and demonstrate both TADF and AIE characteristics. As for , the result indicates that the thin-film environment restricts molecular twisting, consequently reducing nonradiative decay, thereby attributing to the AIE property by density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulation. As for , the result suggests that the restricted access to a conical intersection in a singlet excited via an expansion in the C-S-C angle is the pivotal factor for the AIE characteristic. The C-S-C angle twist of is impeded in the aggregate state and resulted in luminescence. Understanding the mechanisms serves as a valuable guide for the development of new AIE systems, enabling their application in various practical domains.

Physical and photophysical properties of starch-based biopolymer films containing 5-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine (NTA) powder as a nanofiller were examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), stationary UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as resonance light scattering (RLS) and time-resolved measurements, and where possible, analyzed with reference to pristine NTA solutions. AFM studies revealed that the addition of NTA into the starch biopolymer did not significantly affect surface roughness, with all examined films displaying similar Sq values ranging from 70.7 nm to 79.

Direct preparation of silver nanoclusters is of great significance for their applications. In this work, by selecting sodium cyanoborohydride as a weak reducing agent to control the kinetics of the reduction reaction, we successfully prepared silver nanoclusters protected by thiol-containing ligands, including mercaptosuccinic acid, cysteine, and glutathione. Based on the silver nanoclusters protected by mercaptosuccinic acid, silver-gold alloy nanoclusters were obtained through a gold doping reaction.

The development of anticancer diagnostic and therapeutic strategies is of crucial importance to improve efficacy and therapeutic specificity. Here, we describe the synthesis and characterization of fluorescent self-assembling nanomicelles (NMs) based on a biocompatible polysaccharide (cellulose, CE) functionalized with a tetraphenyl ethylene derivative (TPEHy) and loaded with Doxorubicin (DOX) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties and pH-dependent drug release. We obtained CE-TPEHy-NMs with an average diameter of 60 ± 17 nm for unloaded NMs and 86 ± 25 nm for NMs loaded with DOX, respectively.
