Medicare enrollment is complex, particularly for low-income individuals who are dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid, and the wrong plan choice can adversely impact beneficiaries' out-of-pocket costs and access to providers and medications. The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) is a federal program that provides counseling on Medicare coverage, but the degree to which SHIP services are accessible to low-income beneficiaries is unknown. We interviewed SHIP counselors and coordinators to characterize factors affecting access to and quality of SHIP services for low-income beneficiaries. Availability of volunteers was cited as the primary barrier to SHIP services. Topics related to dual eligibility for Medicare and Medicaid were frequently covered in counseling sessions, and staff expressed a desire for more training related to Medicaid and integrated-care programs. Our results suggest that additional counselors and increased training on topics relevant to dually eligible individuals may improve SHIP's ability to provide health insurance-related information to low-income Medicare beneficiaries.

December 2024

Laboratory of Occupational Protection and Ergonomics, National Institute of Occupational Health and Poison Control, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Beijing 100050, China.

To analyze the distribution characteristics of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) among the occupational population in China's key industries during the period from 2018 to 2023, and to provide data support for the formulation of targeted prevention strategies. Between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2023, a cross-sectional epidemiological survey and a retrospective investigation were conducted in seven geographical regions of North China, East China, Central China, South China, Southwest China, Northwest China, and Northeast China, using a combination of epidemiological cross-sectional and retrospective surveys. The industries were stratified according to the degree of closeness to WMSDs, the size of the occupational population, and the importance of the national economy, and then cluster sampling was conducted according to the size of the enterprises (large, medium, and small) within each stratum.

Rapid and sensitive quantitation of hen egg-white lysozyme in foods using paper sensor.

Food Chem

December 2024

International Joint Research Laboratory for Biointerface and Biodetection, and School of Food Science and Technology, Jiangnan University, Wuxi, People's Republic of China. Electronic address:

Hen egg-white lysozyme (HEWL) is commonly used in food preservation and as a substitute for sulfur dioxide in wine production and to prevent late blowing defects in cheese production. However, HEWL is an egg allergen that can cause severe allergic reactions in allergic individuals after accidental ingestion. Therefore, in order to prevent life-threatening health problems caused by consumer allergies, we developed an extremely specific gold immunochromatographic assay (GICA) tolerant to matrix effects for the qualification and quantification of HEWL in food products.

Background: Hypertension is a key risk factor for death and disability, and blood pressure reduction is associated with significant reductions in cardiovascular risk. Large trials have shown that interventions including self-monitoring of blood pressure can reduce blood pressure but real-world data from wider implementation are lacking.

Aim: The self-monitoring and management service evaluation in primary care (SHIP) study will evaluate a novel digital intervention for hypertension management and medication titration platform ("Hypertension-Plus") that is currently undergoing initial implementation into primary care in several parts of the UK.

Article Synopsis
  • Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a significant occupational health issue globally, with a 16% prevalence, and is particularly concerning among Malaysian Armed Forces personnel, especially marine technicians in the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), who are at a heightened risk due to prolonged exposure to hazardous noise levels.
  • A study conducted with 127 marine technicians from RMN revealed a high prevalence of occupational NIHL at 29.9%, with various factors such as age over 30, household income, military rank, and length of service being significantly associated with the risk.
  • The research utilized questionnaires and pure tone audiometric assessments to diagnose NIHL, highlighting the need for awareness and preventive measures within this occupational group.
