Adolescence is a developmental period of relative volatility, where the individual experiences significant changes to their physical and social environment. The ability to adapt to the volatility of one's surroundings is an important cognitive ability, particularly while foraging, a near-ubiquitous behaviour across the animal kingdom. As adolescents experience more volatility in their surroundings, we predicted that this age group would be more adept than adults at using exploration to adjust to volatility.

Improving flavor of Wuyi rock tea processed from rain-soaked leaves by optimizing withering conditions.

Rainy weather restricts the formation of high-quality Wuyi rock tea (WRT). Herein, an optimized withering process for rain-soaked leaves was developed using response surface methodology. Results showed that increasing the withering temperature, relative humidity, and withering time from 25 °C to 40 °C, 80 % to 97 %, and 3 to 6 h, respectively, effectively improved the sensory qualities of the optimized primary WRT (WRTO) prepared from rain-soaked leaves compared with those before optimization.

Neglect symptoms are related to a prediction-hypersensitivity in ipsilesional space.

Cortex

Cognitive Neuroscience, Institute of Neuroscience & Medicine (INM-3), Forschungszentrum Jülich, Jülich, Germany; Department of Neurology, Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Cologne, University of Cologne, Cologne, Germany.

The precise cognitive mechanisms underlying spatial neglect are not fully understood. Recent studies have provided the first evidence for aberrant behavioral and electrophysiological prediction and prediction error responses in patients with neglect, but also in right-hemispheric (RH) stroke patients without neglect. For prediction-dependent attention, as assessed with Posner-type cueing paradigms with volatile cue-target contingencies, studies in healthy volunteers point to a crucial role of the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) - as part of a network commonly disrupted in neglect.

Collaborative integration of SERS and QCM sensing for label-free multi-component gas detection.

Electronic address:

The effective qualitative and quantitative detection of mixed components of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with similar molecular structures has always been a challenge and hotpoint in the research. A novel quartz-crystal microbalance (QCM) nanocomposite sensor integrated with a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection platform for multi-component gas analysis was proposed and fabricated in this paper. MIL-100 (Fe)/PAN composite fibers were developed on QCM via electrospinning of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and hydrothermal synthesis, addressing the integration issues of MIL-100 particles in devices while maintaining high specific surface area.

Strong emissions and aerosol formation potential of higher alkanes from diesel vehicles.

J Hazard Mater

December 2024

College of Environment and Climate, Institute for Environmental and Climate Research, Guangdong-Hongkong-Macau Joint Laboratory of Collaborative Innovation for Environmental Quality, Jinan University, 51143, China.

Higher alkanes are a major class of intermediate volatile organic compounds (IVOCs) emitted by vehicles, which have been considered as important precursors of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in urban area. Dynamometer experiments were conducted to characterize emissions from gasoline and diesel vehicles in China. Three types of higher alkanes, namely acyclic, cyclic, and bicyclic alkanes, were explicitly quantified through the novel proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer with NO ionization (NO PTR-ToF-MS) with time response of 1 second.
