Article Synopsis
  • Autoantibodies against extractable nuclear antigens (ENA) are essential for diagnosing systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARD), and new methods allow for simultaneous detection of multiple anti-ENA reactivities.
  • The study compared eight different immunoassays on sera from 60 SARD patients, 10 inflammatory arthritis patients, and 10 healthy donors to assess their sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy.
  • Results showed good agreement among methods (average kappa of 0.82) and high specificity, but there were notable differences in analytical sensitivity, highlighting the need for clinicians to understand the diagnostic capabilities of the assays used.

Background: Antiextractable nuclear antigens (anti-ENAs) are regarded as diagnostic tests with no established value for serial monitoring. We therefore sought to establish the stability over time of anti-ENAs in a large diagnostic immunopathology laboratory.

Methods: A retrospective review of all patients who had a serial anti-ENA ordered at the Westmead Hospital (Sydney, Australia) was performed over 24 months.

Introduction: Research of cardiac involvement in patients with rheumatoid arthritis can prevent complications and place in a logical secondary prevention. The objective of this study was to investigate the echocardiographic parameters in a population of Senegalese patients with rheumatoid arthritis without clinically evident cardiovascular manifestations.

Patients And Method: We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study, which included prospectively from outpatients in the internal medicine department of university hospital center Aristide Le Dantec in Dakar, Senegal, with a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis without clinically evident cardiovascular disease.

Annual MBL Quality Control Survey of Autoantibodies has continued to this day since it started in 1983 as the only quality control survey of autoantibodies in Japan. The survey has aimed at unification and standardization of measurement value, as well as finding out between-laboratory differences in results through reporting the results of tabulation to the participating laboratories. For carrying out the survey, we intend to make our efforts to promote assurance and standardization of the quality control of the autoantibodies.

A hallmark of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is the production of autoantibodies directed against intracellular antigens. Antibodies to double stranded DNA (dsDNA) are most closely associated with the clinical manifestations of the condition and appear to have a direct role in pathogenesis. On the contrary, the relationship between disease activity in SLE and anti-extractable nuclear antigen (ENA) antibodies has not been well demonstrated.
