Groundwater nitrate (NO) contamination in China has become a serious environmental problem, especially in agricultural production areas, which greatly affects the safety of drinking groundwater and requires urgent attention. In this study, the main sources of groundwater nitrate in China were reviewed, including atmospheric deposition, soil nitrogen, agricultural fertilization, and fecal sewage, among which fecal sewage and agricultural fertilization were the main reasons for the excessive groundwater nitrate. The application of hydrochemical analysis, multivariate statistical analysis, stable isotope tracer method, and microbial source tracking in the source apportionment of groundwater nitrate was summarized. All types of source apportionment methods had certain limitations. It is suggested that a variety of methods should be used to identify the source of groundwater nitrate, and the contribution rate of different pollution sources should be calculated using multivariate statistical analysis and isotope quantitative analysis models. The source apportionment of nitrate pollution has undergone a process from qualitative to quantitative research. At present, the SIAR and MixSIAR models based on N-NOand O-NO have been used widely to analyze the source of nitrate. However, due to the overlap of isotope characteristic values of different input end-members, the difference in N-NOand O-NO values under different spatial and temporal changes, and the influence of isotope fractionation in the process of nitrogen migration and transformation, the results calculated by the model remain uncertain. It is necessary to further optimize the analytical method of the model to obtain the source of nitrate pollution and its contribution rate more accurately to further aid in the scientific management of groundwater resources.

Groundwater contamination is a growing global concern. The objective of the present study is to assess the groundwater quality of Khairpur district, Sindh, Pakistan-a region which is emblematic of broad environmental and public health challenges prevalent in South Asian countries. The study also aims to comprehend the impact of arsenic (As), fluoride (F), and nitrate (NO) dynamics and its health implications.

Groundwater is often used directly by the public in several river basins of India. Hence, this study was carried out with the objective of assessing the quality of groundwater in the Amaravathi basin, India, using a multiple indices approach. Groundwater quality data from 96 monitoring wells were obtained from the Central Groundwater Board and used in this study.

Conventional practices for inorganic nitrogen fertilizer are highly inefficient leading to excess nitrogen in the environment. Excess environmental nitrogen induces ecological (, hypoxia, eutrophication) and public health (, nitrate contaminated drinking water) consequences, motivating adoption of management strategies to improve fertilizer use efficiency. Yet, how to limit the environmental impacts from inorganic nitrogen fertilizer while maintaining crop yields is a persistent challenge.

Nitrate pollution is widespread environmental concern in most shallow groundwater systems. This study conducts a comprehensive investigation of shallow groundwater, deep groundwater, and surface water in a region of the Chinese Loess Plateau. Nitrate pollution in this area is severe with more than half of the shallow groundwater samples exceeding the limit of nitrate for drinking water (50 mg/L).

Understanding the geochemical mechanisms governing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in groundwater is essential for mitigating health risks. However, the processes driving Cr(VI) accumulation and migration in loess regions remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated the occurrence, release, and migration mechanisms of Cr(VI) across different groundwater environmental units (GEUs) in the south-central Loess Plateau, China.
