Introduction: Pediatric ostomy creation is becoming increasingly prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The procedure is associated with both physical and ethical challenges for patients, their families, and medical providers.
Ethical Discussion: Counseling parents of children in need of ostomy creation must address each of their trepidations while seeking to promote the ethical tenets of beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy, quality of life, and justice.
Conclusion: As pediatric surgical care in SSA continues to progress, efforts to ameliorate challenges to providing holistic patient-centric care must also progress. This manuscript outlines ethical dilemmas associated with pediatric ostomy care in SSA and lists efforts and initiatives seeking to address them.

Background: It is challenging to teach the complexity of the doctor-patient relationship through attitude, ethics, and communication (AETCOM) modules, particularly without being formally trained and especially to first-year medical students who do not interact directly with patients. The present study was undertaken to assess the effectiveness of trigger films (TFs) or short movie clips as a teaching-learning tool to train undergraduate medical students on various aspects of doctor-patient relationships.
Methods: Two modules on various aspects of the doctor-patient relationship were developed using TFs and written case studies and implemented on Phase Ⅰ medical students.

Infectious myocarditis (IM) and infective endocarditis (IE), sometimes associated with infection of the surrounding mediastinal tissue or embolic complications caused by residual implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) lead material embedded in the ventricle, present a significant challenge for cardiac surgeons due to the difficulty of precisely locating the old intracardiac pacing lead remnants because of the heart's continuous movement. We present the case of successful two-stage elective sternotomy extraction of two residual defibrillator leads, one trapped in the left innominate vein, easily removed after veinotomy without cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), and the other embedded intramyocardially in the inferior wall of the right ventricle, successfully removed under CPB after fluoroscopic guidance. The patient was discharged four weeks post-operation without complications.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThis essay is an attempt to determine what Robert Bernasconi's body of work in Critical Philosophy of Race can teach us about the way in which we, philosophers and professors of philosophy, ought to treat our institutional heritage. What should we make, for instance, of moral claims made by philosophers of the modern era who - tacitly or explicitly - manifested certain levels of endorsement toward the Atlantic Slave Trade? How should we comprehend the conceptual tools that we have inherited from them, knowing that those were formulated alongside justificatory claims for the enslavement of Africans - claims that we now deem undoubtably and universally immoral? I extract from Bernasconi's writings an implicit methodology that can be broken down into three main moves: (1) a historiographical work, akin to Michel Foucault's 'archaeological' method, aimed at uncovering the material conditions that allowed for the emergence of philosophical ideas of the past, (2) a dialectical work aimed at interpreting this collection of historical data through the critical lens of race, and (3) a pedagogical work aimed at transforming the practice of academic philosophy in light of the critique. I conclude that his methodological contribution culminates in an invitation to revisit and transform the past of the institution by treating the history of academic philosophy as philosophically and conceptually relevant rather than merely incidental.
