Mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation is facilitated by the combined activities of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 (Cpt1) and Cpt2, which generate and utilize acylcarnitines, respectively. We compare the response of mice with liver-specific deficiencies in the liver-enriched Cpt1a or the ubiquitously expressed Cpt2 and discover that they display unique metabolic, physiological, and molecular phenotypes. The loss of Cpt1a or Cpt2 results in the induction of the muscle-enriched isoenzyme Cpt1b in hepatocytes in a Pparα-dependent manner.

Sandercyanin is a mildly fluorescent biliprotein with a large Stokes shift, a tetrameric quaternary structure, and a biliverdin (BV) chromophore that does not covalently bond to the protein. To adapt this promising protein for use in bioimaging, it is necessary to produce monomeric mutants that retain the spectroscopic properties while increasing the fluorescence quantum yield. Modulating these properties through the protonation state of BV's propionic tails is a possible avenue, if detailed mechanistic information on the role of such chains becomes available.

Since the first description of a set of characteristics of aging as so-called hallmarks or pillars in 2013/2014, these characteristics have served as guideposts for the research in aging biology. They have been examined in a range of contexts, across tissues, in response to disease conditions or environmental factors, and served as a benchmark for various anti-aging interventions. While the hallmarks of aging were intended to capture generalizable characteristics of aging, they are derived mostly from studies of rodents and humans.

Background: This study aimed to describe and compare therapeutic approaches for horses with acute diarrhea in different geographic regions worldwide.
Methods: Clinical information was retrospectively collected from diarrheic horses presented to participating institutions between 2016 and 2020, including fluid therapy on admission, antimicrobial drugs, probiotics, anti-endotoxic medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, gastroprotectants, digital cryotherapy, and toxin-binding agents. Seasonal and geographic differences were investigated.
