We developed a microscopic scanning for vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectroscopy in which a quantum cascade laser is equipped with a highly focused infrared light source to attain a spatial resolution of 100 μm. This system was applied to the forewing of a European hornet to reveal how the protein domains are organised. Two-dimensional patterns were obtained from the VCD signals with steps of 100 μm. We scanned the 1500-1740 cm wavenumber range, which covers amide I and II absorptions. Zone sequenced α-helical and β-sheet domains within an area of 200 μm in membranes close to where two veins cross. The sign of the VCD signal at 1650 cm changed from positive to negative when probed along the zone axis, intermediated by the absence of VCD activity. The significance of this zone is discussed from the viewpoint of the mechanical properties required for flying motion. These features are unattainable using conventional FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) or FT-VCD methods with a spatial resolution of ∼10 mm.

Different angles and central axis length combinations of the reading man flap were studied to determine the optimal angles and central axis length combinations for reducing the stress on the flap tip. First, different models and corresponding finite element models of flaps with different angles and central axial lengths were established by ANSYS software. Then, skin flap transfer was achieved through forced displacement, and the stress distributions of the flap with different angles and central axial lengths under different materials were obtained.

BACKGROUND The Smovey Vibroswing exercise device consists of a circular tube containing 4 steel balls, partly covered by a cushioning handle, to strengthen the arm and shoulder muscles. This study aimed to compare the effects of using a Smovey Vibroswing versus dumbbell exercises on muscle activity and body composition of the upper limbs in 23 women under 30 years of age. MATERIAL AND METHODS Subjects were 23 women under the age of 30 years, residing in South Korea, with no musculoskeletal diseases or shoulder surgeries in the past year.

Achiral metasurfaces with near-field optical chirality have attracted great attention in molecular sensing and chiral emission control. Here, the circular dichroism (CD) response of an achiral metasurface induced by spatially selective coupling with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) molecules is demonstrated. A designed achiral metasurface with a V-shaped resonator exhibits large optical chirality with a strongly dissymmetric distribution under circular polarization.

The flextensional transducer (FT) is a typical low-frequency transmitting transducer that is capable of high-power operation due to its capacity for displacement amplification. This article uses the structural configuration of the class IV FT as the basis for designing a ring transducer, which is a circular structure comprising a multitude of class IV flextensional structures as well as circular acoustic radiation structures. The flextensional structure drives the circular acoustic radiation structure, which in turn generates sound waves at low frequencies.

A vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) instrument having a thermoelectrically cooled detector (denoted as a TEC unit) was constructed in this study. An electronic device, instead of liquid nitrogen, was employed in the instrument to cool the detector. The feasibility of the system was examined by recording the VCD spectra of liquid pinenes and insect wings.
